Summary

  • uloop screenshot --prefab-path <asset path> renders a prefab or model asset on its own and returns a PNG, in Edit Mode or Play Mode, without opening Prefab Mode or touching open scenes or the asset.
  • --prefab-background-color picks the background (#RRGGBB / #RRGGBBAA, default #808080; #00000000 is transparent with URP).

User Impact

  • Before: checking how a prefab looks meant opening it in Prefab Mode and capturing the Scene view, whose size, 2D/3D mode, and camera depend on the user's layout. UI prefabs often came out as a grid and move handles, and the opened Prefab Stage had to be closed again.
  • After: one command renders the prefab in an isolated preview scene with a temporary camera. UI parts are sized to all of their RectTransforms (overflowing children and nested Canvases are included), screen UI keeps its in-game layout at the Game View size, 3D objects are framed from the front-left, and flat content is framed straight on.

Changes

  • New prefab capture path behind the screenshot tool entry point; the existing window / rendering capture is unchanged.
  • Validation rejects options that only apply to window or rendering captures (--capture-mode other than auto, annotate options, --raycast-layer-mask) and malformed colors; --prefab-background-color without --prefab-path is rejected. --window-name / --match-mode are ignored.
  • A RectTransform root without its own enabled Canvas is always captured as a UI part, so a nested Canvas left in Screen Space Overlay mode does not turn the part into full-screen UI.
  • Prefabs with nothing visible are rejected, including renderers with empty bounds such as a particle system that has not emitted, instead of returning a blank image.
  • Prefabs with visible renderers (3D models, sprites) are drawn with a preview camera, the camera type Inspector previews use, so they appear even in render pipelines whose game cameras draw only certain layers or skip clearing. Preview cameras do not draw uGUI, so UI keeps a game camera, and in a prefab that mixes renderers with a world-space Canvas the Canvas does not appear.
  • The temporary Canvas that hosts a UI part sits on the built-in UI layer, which decides whether uGUI is drawn; the prefab's own layers are not changed.
  • With an opaque background, a probe render with nothing visible measures whether the pipeline clears the capture camera. If it does, drawn colors are kept and only made opaque, so shaders without a separate alpha blend are not composited twice. If it does not, the background is composited under every pixel left not fully opaque (premultiplied over, in linear space for Linear projects). Transparent and translucent backgrounds are left to the pipeline and skip the probe.
  • A render in which nothing appears (every pixel transparent or the background color) is rejected instead of saving an empty image.
  • A scaled UI part no longer gains an extra pixel from float noise when its size is rounded up.
  • Invalid input is rejected before the preview scene is created; the preview scene and textures are released on every exit.
  • Nested Canvases are skipped when switching screen-space Canvases to the capture camera. Unity ignores renderMode / worldCamera assignments on nested Canvases, so this exclusion is not observable and is not pinned by a test.
  • The skill reference notes that the capture happens right after instantiation, so content scripts assign later and post-processing such as bloom do not appear.
  • Skill: two parameter rows, references/prefab-capture.md for framing rules and options, and the Match Modes table moved to references/match-modes.md to keep SKILL.md small. Tool catalog regenerated and shared release inputs restamped.

Verification

  • uloop compile: 0 errors, 0 warnings.
  • uloop run-tests --filter-type class, one class at a time, all passed with none skipped: ScreenshotParameterValidatorPrefabTests 24, ScreenshotParameterValidatorEdgeTests 8, PrefabCaptureFramingTests 25, PrefabImagePixelsTests 10, PrefabScreenshotUseCaseTests 20, PrefabPreviewRendererTests 3, ScreenshotToolPrefabRoutingTests 1, ScreenshotUseCaseTests 8, ScreenshotUseCaseCharacterizationTests 10, ScreenshotUseCaseWindowCaptureTests 8, EditorWindowCaptureUtilityTests 5, DefaultToolsCatalogDriftTests 1, SkillParameterTableCoverageTests 2, StaticFacadeStateGuardTests 20.
  • The real renderer runs in CI: the image-size test and the direct renderer test are ignored only on the Null device; the pixel-value test and the two pipeline-clear probe tests are limited to a real GPU (ignored on Null and OpenGLCore). On Metal all pass.
  • The nested-overlay-Canvas test fails without the new UI part branch (Kind becomes ScreenUi), and the empty-bounds tests fail without the new check.
  • Mutation checks: switching to a preview camera whenever any renderer exists, or always, fails the world-space Canvas tests; dropping the UI layer on the temporary Canvas fails the UI part tests; removing the empty-render check, comparing against a transparent clear color, or always compositing the background each fails the matching use case tests; ignoring the pipeline-clear result (always compositing) gives 201 instead of 192, passing a constant gamma flag instead of the project's color space gives 252 instead of 205, and dropping the culling mask restore after the probe fails the renderer test.
  • Manual checks in the development Editor (Unity 2022.3, URP, Linear, Metal):
    • A UI prefab whose child overflows the root: prefab, 160x100, checkbox, label, and white square all visible on gray.
    • A prefab with a Screen Space Overlay Canvas: 676x380, equal to the Game View size, laid out as in game.
    • A 3D prefab with a cube and a sphere: Game View size, both fully in frame.
    • A temporary cube prefab with the URP Lit material: drawn lit on the gray background through the preview camera (deleted afterwards).
    • The pipeline-clear probe reports a clearing pipeline for every capture kind: UI part, screen UI, a 3D prefab through the preview camera, and a temporary world-space Canvas prefab.
    • A temporary UI part with a white image at alpha 0.5 on the default gray: center pixel (205,205,205,255), not brightened to 213 (deleted afterwards).
    • --prefab-background-color "#00000000": corner pixel alpha 0.
    • Play Mode: same 160x100 result as Edit Mode.
    • A prefab with only a particle system: rejected with the empty-bounds message instead of a blank image.
    • Rejections: missing asset, --capture-mode window, #FFF, and a color without --prefab-path each return the expected message.
    • Preview scene count, active scene dirty flag, and current stage were identical before and after a capture; git status showed no asset changes.
  • scripts/sync-tool-docs.sh --check, check-skill-size, scripts/check-file-length.sh, scripts/check-code-complexity.sh: all pass.

Add PrefabPath and PrefabBackgroundColor to the screenshot schema and
the validation a prefab capture needs before any asset is loaded.

- ValidatePrefab rejects options that only make sense for window or
  rendering captures (explicit CaptureMode, annotate options,
  RaycastLayerMask) and checks the resolution scale and color format.
- The background color accepts only #RRGGBB / #RRGGBBAA; a regex guards
  the format because ColorUtility alone would also accept color names.
- The non-prefab path rejects a background color without PrefabPath so
  a silently ignored option is reported instead.
- The resolution scale range check is extracted so both paths share the
  same message.
Decide what a prefab screenshot renders as and aim a temporary camera at
an instance placed in a preview scene, without touching the asset.

- Screen UI (an enabled screen-space Canvas) is checked first and keeps
  the in-game layout at the Game View size by switching the outermost
  Canvases to the capture camera.
- A RectTransform root is a UI part sized to the union of all active
  RectTransforms, so children that overflow the root are not cut off,
  and counted in UI units so a scaled world-space Canvas keeps its size.
- Other prefabs are framed as a 3D object from the front-left, or
  straight on when they have no depth; a directional light is added
  when the prefab has no enabled light.
- Prefabs with nothing to render are rejected as a parameter error.
…ervable

Unity ignores renderMode and worldCamera assignments on a nested Canvas,
so removing the exclusion leaves every assertion passing. The screen UI
test now checks only the root Canvas switch, and the exclusion's comment
states why it stays.
UiPartWithOverflowingChild has a white 100x100 panel with a red badge
that overflows to the left, so the capture must size to all of its
RectTransforms. EmptyRoot has nothing to render and must be rejected.
Add the prefab screenshot use case and the off-screen renderer behind it.

- Input is validated and the asset loaded before the preview scene is
  created, so rejected requests leave no scene, texture, or file behind.
- The instance and a temporary camera live only in the preview scene,
  which is closed in finally on every exit; the asset is never modified.
- The renderer writes through an sRGB RenderTexture so PNG values match
  the requested background color in Linear projects.
- ResolutionScale shrinks the image after rendering, reusing the
  existing scaling helper, which becomes internal for this.
- The renderer sits behind an interface so tests can verify the camera
  settings and cleanup without a GPU; one test uses the real renderer
  and is ignored on devices whose sRGB writes do not match a real GPU.
ScreenshotUseCase resolves auto to rendering in Play Mode before it
validates, which would apply rendering-only checks to a prefab request
and is already at the file-length limit. The tool entry point now sends
any request with PrefabPath straight to PrefabScreenshotUseCase.
Add the two options to the screenshot skill and the generated tool
catalog, and restamp the shared release inputs because the catalog
gained new properties.

- The parameter rows stay short because they also feed --help; framing
  rules, ignored and rejected options, the default gray, transparency
  under URP, the added light, and Play Mode behavior live in
  references/prefab-capture.md.
- The Match Modes table moves to references/match-modes.md to keep
  SKILL.md well under the 8,000-byte injection cap.

📝 Walkthrough

The screenshot tool now supports prefab and model captures in an isolated preview scene. It selects framing based on the asset contents, renders and saves a PNG, and returns prefab-specific capture metadata.

# TryParseHtmlString(string, out Color)

Attempts to convert a html color string.

Read time 1 minute

Last updated 9 days ago

## Definition

  * Type: Method
  * Namespace: UnityEngine
  * Assembly: UnityEngine.CoreModule

## TryParseHtmlString(string, Color)

    `public static bool TryParseHtmlString(string htmlString, out Color color)

### Parameters

#### htmlString

    `string`

Case insensitive html string to be converted into a color.

#### color

    `Color`

The converted color.

### Returns

#### Type

|

#### Description

--- | ---
bool | True if the string was successfully converted else false.

### Remarks

Strings that begin with '#' will be parsed as hexadecimal in the following way:

#RGB (becomes RRGGBB)

#RRGGBB

#RGBA (becomes RRGGBBAA)

#RRGGBBAA

When not specified alpha will default to FF.

Strings that do not begin with '#' will be parsed as literal colors, with the following supported:

red, cyan, blue, darkblue, lightblue, purple, yellow, lime, fuchsia, white, silver, grey, black, orange, brown, maroon, green, olive, navy, teal, aqua, magenta..

The following example creates a custom PropertyDrawer that allows the user to input html colors. This property drawer can be shown in the inspector when a color property has the attribute ColorHtmlProperty.

### Examples

    `// This is not an editor script.
    using UnityEngine;

    public class ColorHtmlPropertyAttribute : PropertyAttribute
    {
    }
    `

    `// This is an editor script and should be placed in an 'Editor' directory.
    using UnityEngine;
    using UnityEditor;

    [CustomPropertyDrawer(typeof(ColorHtmlPropertyAttribute))]
    public class ColorHtmlPropertyDrawer : PropertyDrawer
    {
        public override void OnGUI(Rect position, SerializedProperty property, GUIContent label)
        {
            Rect htmlField = new Rect(position.x, position.y, position.width - 100, position.height);
            Rect colorField = new Rect(position.x + htmlField.width, position.y, position.width - htmlField.width, position.height);

            string htmlValue = EditorGUI.TextField(htmlField, label, "#" + ColorUtility.ToHtmlStringRGBA(property.colorValue));

            Color newCol;
            if (ColorUtility.TryParseHtmlString(htmlValue, out newCol))
                property.colorValue = newCol;

            property.colorValue = EditorGUI.ColorField(colorField, property.colorValue);
        }
    }
    `

    `// This shows how we would use the PropertyDrawer.
    using UnityEngine;

    public class Example : MonoBehaviour
    {
        [ColorHtmlProperty]
        public Color htmlColor = Color.green;

# ColorUtility.TryParseHtmlString

public static bool TryParseHtmlString (string htmlString, out Color color);

#RGB(变成 RRGGBB)
#RRGGBB
#RGBA(变成 RRGGBBAA)
#RRGGBBAA

Anchor the background-color regex at the absolute end.

In .NET, $ can match before a final newline. Therefore, #336699\n can pass both IsValid and Resolve, although the documented contract requires the entire value to be #RRGGBB or #RRGGBBAA.

Update the HexColor regex in PrefabBackgroundColorParser to anchor at the
absolute start and end of the input, so values with a trailing newline are
rejected while valid #RRGGBB and #RRGGBBAA values remain accepted.

…rning a blank image

A prefab with only a particle system that has not emitted, or a
MeshRenderer without a mesh, has zero-sized renderer bounds. Framing
treated it as flat and rendered with a zero-sized orthographic camera,
returning success with a blank image. Empty bounds are now rejected as
a parameter error, and the skill reference says so.
…not as screen UI

A Canvas created from the UI menu and moved under a part keeps its
Screen Space Overlay mode. With no Canvas on the part's root, that
nested Canvas looked like an outermost one, so the whole prefab was
captured at the Game View size and the overlay covered the part.
A RectTransform root without an enabled Canvas of its own now always
goes to the UI part path, where its nested canvases render under the
temporary world-space Canvas.
The only test through the real renderer was ignored on both the Null
and OpenGLCore devices, so CI never exercised it. The image size check
now runs on every device except Null, leaving only the pixel check
limited to a real GPU, and a direct renderer test checks the returned
size and that the active RenderTexture and camera target are restored.
The reference said the first matching rule wins but listed screen UI
before UI parts and 3D before flat content, so a Canvas-less UI part or
a sprite read as matching the wrong rule. The rules now follow the
implementation order and state which roots count as a UI part.

Assert that nested screen-space Canvases remain unchanged.

Arrange_WithAnOverlayCanvasRoot_SwitchesTheRootCanvasToTheCaptureCamera reaches the screen-UI path, but it checks only the outer Canvas. If CollectTopCanvases starts returning descendants, ArrangeScreenUi can assign the capture camera to the nested Canvas while all current assertions still pass.

… filter game cameras

Some custom render pipelines draw game cameras only on certain layers
and skip their clear, so UI parts, models, and sprites came back as
empty images even though the capture reported success.

- Prefabs with visible renderers now render through a preview camera,
  the camera type Inspector previews use, which pipelines draw plainly.
  Preview cameras do not draw uGUI, so a prefab whose only content is a
  world-space Canvas (or one next to renderers with empty bounds) keeps
  a game camera.
- The temporary Canvas that hosts a UI part sits on the built-in UI
  layer, which decides whether uGUI is drawn; the prefab's own layers
  are left as saved.
…round themselves

A pipeline that draws nothing for the capture camera produced an empty
PNG reported as success, and a pipeline that skips the clear left the
background transparent even when an opaque color was requested.

- An image with no visible pixel other than the clear color (within one
  step) is rejected as a parameter error before anything is saved; the
  message suggests another background color for single-color prefabs.
- An opaque background is composited under every pixel that is not
  fully opaque after rendering. Pixels drawn over a transparent clear
  are premultiplied, so this is a premultiplied over, done in linear
  space in Linear projects to match what the GPU draws. Translucent and
  transparent backgrounds are left to the pipeline, since compositing
  them again would double a background it already drew.
- The test renderer now returns explicit pixels so the empty-image
  check cannot reject every use case test by accident.
Dividing world corners by the root scale leaves float noise such as
109.0000076, which rounding up turned into an extra pixel. Pixel counts
now ignore excess below 0.01 UI units before rounding up.
…filter game cameras

The prefab capture reference now says that prefabs with renderers use a
preview camera (which does not draw uGUI), that the temporary UI part
Canvas sits on the UI layer, that the prefab's own Canvases keep their
layers and may be rejected when a pipeline skips them, that an opaque
background is composited after rendering, and that renders with nothing
visible are rejected.

Reject UI-part image sizes above the texture limit.

ArrangeUiPart converts the RectTransform bounds directly to pixel dimensions and checks only that both dimensions are at least 1. PrefabPreviewRenderer.Render then allocates both a RenderTexture and a Texture2D with those dimensions. A large sizeDelta or small root scale can therefore request a texture larger than SystemInfo.maxTextureSize, which may cause an allocation failure or an Editor stall.

Update ArrangeUiPart to convert the UI pixel dimensions once, reject either
dimension when it exceeds SystemInfo.maxTextureSize with a parameter-validation
exception, and reuse the validated dimensions when constructing
PrefabCaptureFrame.

3. **Flat object** — content with no depth (sprites, quads, a lone world-space Canvas) is viewed straight on with an orthographic camera at the Game View size. A lone world-space Canvas is drawn on its own layer, so a pipeline whose game cameras skip that layer draws nothing and the capture is rejected.
4. **3D object** — anything else with an enabled Renderer is viewed from the front-left with a perspective camera at the Game View size, with the whole object in frame.

Prefabs with visible renderers (rules 3 and 4) are drawn with a preview camera, the kind Inspector previews use, so they appear even in pipelines whose game cameras draw only certain layers. Preview cameras do not draw uGUI, so in a prefab that mixes renderers and a world-space Canvas, the Canvas does not appear.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clarify the camera rule for world-space Canvas-only content.

Rule 3 includes a lone world-space Canvas, but this sentence says that rules 3 and 4 use a preview camera. The documented behavior keeps world-space Canvas-only content on a game camera, and preview cameras do not draw uGUI. Exclude Canvas-only content from this sentence and state its game-camera path.

Update the camera description for rules 3 and 4 to exclude prefabs containing
only a world-space Canvas from the preview-camera path; explicitly state that
Canvas-only content is captured with a game camera, while preserving the
existing preview-camera behavior for visible renderers.

…ture camera

A probe render with a culling mask of 0 shows only what the render pipeline
itself paints. When every pixel comes back opaque, the pipeline clears the
camera to its background color, which decides how translucent pixels must be
treated afterwards. The render target is now cleared to transparent before
rendering because a new RenderTexture holds undefined contents.

The culling mask is restored in finally so the real render still draws the
prefab.
…that clear the camera

In a pipeline that clears the capture camera to its background color, a
shader without a separate alpha blend leaves pixels whose color is already
blended over the background but whose alpha stays below 255. Compositing the
background again brightened them. Whether the pipeline clears cannot be read
from the image, because a full-screen translucent dimmer leaves no transparent
pixel either way, so it is measured with a probe render before the real one:
when the pipeline clears, the drawn colors are only made opaque; otherwise the
background is composited as before. The probe runs only for an opaque
background, the only case that composites.

Tests also pin that the use case passes the project's color space to the
compositing step.
…ab capture cannot show

The background paragraph now says that drawn colors are only made opaque when
the pipeline clears the capture camera, and that the background is composited
under unpainted and translucent pixels otherwise. A new limitation notes that
the prefab is captured right after instantiation, so content scripts assign
later and post-processing such as bloom do not appear.
