Motivation

Refs #78

The Python 3.9 job fails on ubuntu-latest when running Ubuntu 26.04 because actions/setup-python cannot find a matching distribution:

The version '3.9' with architecture 'x64' was not found for Ubuntu 26.04.

Migrate to uv to provision the required Python versions and simplify Python setup and dependency installation.

Changes

  • Replace actions/setup-python and separate pip installation steps with astral-sh/setup-uv.
  • Define test dependencies in a test dependency group in pyproject.toml.
  • Run tests with uv run --group test pytest.

Validation

  • The workflow ran successfully in my fork, including Python 3.9
