Stacked on #458 (which is stacked on #456). Fixes the two review findings on #456.

P1: a metadata write could change whose window a request saves

creator looked up the author by the request's current resourceVersion. If Alice creates a
request and label-controller patches its labels before the claim, the patch's fact sits at that
version, so label-controller became status.author and the request attached to their window.

The lookup is now a creation query (AuthorQuery.Creation → queue.FactQuery.Creation):

  • An audit fact carries created: true for the write that created its object. That covers a create,
and also any write the API server answered 201 Created, so a request created by server-side apply
    still resolves.
  • FactIndex.Lookup answers a creation query only from the uid's creating fact in the exact tier.
Every (uid, rv) fact has its own entry there, so a later write never overwrites the creating fact.
No weaker tier is tried. If the creating fact is missing, the request stays unresolved, and on a
provider that has received facts it is refused AuthorUnresolved, as before.
  • A creation waiter waits on the uid's latest-tier key, which every creating fact fills.

P2: a request that saved nothing could report its apply as lost

followApply always asked the worker. An AfterPush request refused before any worker heard of it
(AuthorUnresolved) ended Applied=Unknown, Lost. A request with no status.commit now settles
Applied=True, NothingToApply without asking the worker. This matches the documented contract
("the request pushed no commit"). A request that pushed an empty commit has status.commit set and is
still followed through the worker.

Tests

  • TestFactIndex_CreationQueryReadsOnlyTheCreatingFact: create by alice, patch by
label-controller. The creation query names alice, and the exact query at the patch's version still
names label-controller. A uid with only a non-creating write is absent.
  • TestFactIndex_CreationQueryWaitsForTheCreatingFact, TestAuthorFactFromEvent_MarksTheWriteThatCreatedTheObject.
  • TestCommitRequestCore_ARefusedRequestHasNothingToApply,
TestCommitRequestReconcile_ARequestThatPushedNothingHasNothingToApply. Neither looks up an apply.

task lint and task test pass. e2e runs in CI.

Walkthrough

The change adds UID-based lookup of the audit fact that created a CommitRequest, rather than using later writes to identify its author. It also settles requests without a committed revision as NothingToApply, without querying the apply worker.

Changes: Creation-event authorship

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mark and index creation facts
internal/queue/author_fact.go, internal/queue/author_fact_test.go, internal/queue/fact_index.go, internal/queue/fact_index_store.go, internal/queue/fact_index_test.go
Author facts identify creating events. Creation queries search for a live creating fact by UID, and tests cover later writes and facts that arrive after a query.
Route author queries to creation facts
internal/watch/author_resolver.go, internal/controller/commitrequest_core.go, internal/controller/commitrequest_core_test.go, docs/architecture.md, docs/spec/commitrequest-design.md
Author queries pass the creation flag to the fact index. CommitRequest lookup uses UID and creation status. The documentation describes creation-event attribution and subsequent reads from the claim.

Requests without a committed revision

Layer / File(s) Summary
Settle requests with no commit
internal/controller/commitrequest_apply.go, internal/controller/commitrequest_apply_test.go, internal/controller/commitrequest_core_test.go
When a request has no committed revision, apply following reports NothingToApply without querying the worker. Tests cover no-window finalization and an unresolved author.

A CommitRequest's author can be lost when a later write returns the object at the creating version, for example a no-op reapply. The request is then refused as author-unresolved. The failure needs a specific write sequence. Fix the creating-fact retention before merging.

…le no-commit applies

A CommitRequest's author was looked up by its current resourceVersion, so a
write between creation and the claim (a controller patching its labels) named
that writer as status.author, and the request attached to their window. The
author lookup is now a creation query: only a fact marked Created, for the
request's uid, answers it. A fact is Created for a create, or for a write the
API server answered 201 Created (server-side apply of a new object).

A request with catchUp: AfterPush that pushed no commit asked its worker how
the apply went. One refused before any worker heard of it (AuthorUnresolved)
was then reported Applied=Unknown, Lost. A request without status.commit now
settles Applied=True, NothingToApply, without asking the worker.

Use American English and active voice.

Change this sentence to “The claim stores the author; subsequent reads use that value.” The current sentence uses “afterwards” and “is written.” As per coding guidelines, use “American English everywhere” and “State what the software does, in present tense, active voice.”

Keep creating facts from being overwritten by later writes at the same version.

lookupCreation searches only the exact tier, and it matches an entry only while fact.Created is true. putKeyed replaces the existing entry at the same (uid, rv) key. A later write that returns the object at the creating resourceVersion, such as a no-op patch or reapply, can therefore replace the creating fact with a Created=false fact. The creation query then finds no creator and returns AttributionAbsent. For a CommitRequest, the author lookup can then fail, and the request can be refused as AuthorUnresolved.

A creating fact that has a UID but no resourceVersion can also miss the exact tier, so it can produce the same result.

Store creating facts in a separate UID-keyed tier that follows the index's TTL and eviction rules. Keep the exact-tier lookup for ADDED and MODIFIED events unchanged. Add tests for a no-op write at the creating version and for a creating fact without a resourceVersion.
