feat: enhance Composio tool execution and sandbox integration: - #327
- Updated the Composio service to support querying tools without the default important filter, allowing for more comprehensive tool retrieval.
- Implemented version resolution logic to ensure concrete tool versions are used during execution, improving reliability.
- Added new API routes for managing sandbox environments, including reconciliation of Nova sandboxes and handling of GitHub repositories.
- Introduced tests for new functionalities, ensuring proper validation and error handling in tool execution and sandbox operations.
- Enhanced the Nova sandbox policy to manage network access and repository checkouts securely.
This change adds provider-backed Nova cloud workspaces, workspace tools, recovery, and session-turn integration with patch artifact retrieval. It also updates Composio tool catalog listing and requires concrete tool versions for execution.

Several defects in the new cloud workspace flow should be fixed before merge. Replayed turns can leave a run queued and unexecuted. Early failures such as GitHub re-auth can lock an organization's workspace slot and permanently expire the thread's workspace. Stuck recovery rows can stop cleanup for everyone else. E2B checkout can fail for mid-sized repositories. The feature is flag-gated, so impact is limited to opted-in users.

Make git init and git commit quiet, or the baseline setup fails for medium-sized repositories.
The setup command runs through workspace.runBounded with the default limit, MAX_OUTPUT_BYTES (20,000 bytes).
The first commit prints one create mode 100644 <path> line per file.
A repository with a few hundred files goes over 20 KB.
capture then sets truncated = true and aborts the command.
setup.successful is false, so checkoutE2B throws "E2B baseline initialization failed".
As a result, E2B provisioning fails for most real repositories. git init also writes a multi-line hint to stderr, and that hint counts toward the same limit.

Release the lease when the failure happens before any provider call.
close() keeps the lease whenever sandbox is undefined. That is correct only when a provider create or connect call may have run. Several failures happen before any provider call:
input.signal.throwIfAborted() on Line 76.
getGithubTokenForUser on Line 86 or Line 102, for example a GithubReauthRequiredError.
In these cases nothing exists at the provider, but the following still happens:
The row keeps leaseRunId for 660 s. The row counts against the org-wide limit of 2 (Line 37), and a retry gets "busy" (Line 40).
When the lease expires, reconcileSandboxWorkspaces finds no provider resource. It sets missing = true (Line 181 / Line 194, or the 404 path), status: "expired" and expiresAt: new Date(0).
From then on, Line 41 throws "retention expired" for this thread.
So a common GitHub re-auth failure blocks a concurrency slot for the whole org for about 11 minutes. It also permanently disables cloud mode for the thread.
Track whether a provider call has started. If no call has started, clear the lease directly.
Proposed fix
let sandbox: Sandbox | E2BWorkspace | undefined
+ let providerTouched = false
...
const close = async () => {
if (closed) return
- if (!sandbox) return // Keep lease for the reconciler if provider creation was ambiguous.+ if (!sandbox) {+ // Keep lease for the reconciler only if provider creation was ambiguous.+ if (providerTouched) return+ await prisma.novaSandboxSession.updateMany({ where: { id: registry.id, leaseRunId: input.runId }, data: { leaseRunId: null, leaseExpiresAt: null, status: registry.baseSha ? registry.status : "failed" } })+ closed = true+ return+ }
Set providerTouched = true right before each call to E2BSandbox.connect, createE2BWorkspace, Sandbox.get, and Sandbox.create. Line 42 rejects rows with no baseSha. For a row that never reached a provider, either delete the row or allow a retry, so the thread is not locked out.

Two rows that always fail recovery block all other recovery.
The reconciler picks take: 2 rows ordered by expiresAt asc. When recovery fails for a row, the catch on Line 212 keeps status: "recovering" and the lease. The row still matches Line 155 or Line 156, so the next 5-minute run picks the same rows again.
Two such rows are enough to stop all reconciliation. Some realistic causes:
The E2B rows remain after E2B_API_KEY is removed, and then e2bCredentials() throws.
A row has an unknown provider.
The provider keeps returning errors other than 404.
Other expired leases are then never released. They hold the 2-per-org slots permanently, and their runs never move to failed.
Line 162 changes the row, so Prisma bumps updatedAt on each claim. If you order by updatedAt, a row that failed moves to the back of the queue.

nova_sandbox_read fails when a file contains non-ASCII text or binary bytes.
The read handler decodes up to 16,000 bytes and prints them with json.dumps. By default, json.dumps sets ensure_ascii=True, so each non-ASCII character becomes a 6-byte \uXXXX escape.
Each invalid byte becomes \ufffd, which is 6 bytes.
A 3-byte UTF-8 character becomes 6 bytes.
Escaped quotes, tabs, and newlines also grow.
The output is then bigger than MAX_OUTPUT_BYTES (20,000). Line 114 calls runBounded without maxBytes, so the command is killed and returns successful: false with cut-off JSON. Files with non-English text, minified files, and binary files cannot be paged through as the tool description promises.

Claim a queued run before ending a replay.
If the messages API posts a message and the turn endpoint later receives the same clientMessageId, posted.replayed is true while its run can still be queued. This return skips the only queued-run claim, so the turn never executes. The same state can follow an interruption between message creation and the claim. Attempt the queued-run claim for a replay; return a replay finish only when another turn has already claimed it.

Add an index on the agentSessionId foreign key.
agentSessionId is a foreign key with onDelete: Cascade. The only index that contains it is the composite unique key, and that key starts with userId. So the database cannot use that index for cascade deletes or for lookups by session. Each agent_session delete then scans nova_sandbox_session.
As per coding guidelines: "Add indexes for frequently queried foreign keys".

Adds persistent Vercel and E2B cloud workspaces, private patch downloads, scheduled cleanup, and broader Composio tool discovery with concrete execution versions.
Nova Agent edits GitHub projects in a retained cloud workspace.
Repeated message submissions reuse the original run.
Connected Composio tools include less-used actions and concrete versions.
Nova can find accessible GitHub repositories and share tool slots across apps.

Large E2B checkouts fail
The initial git commit prints a create mode line for every file. For repositories with roughly 1,000 files, this exceeds runBounded’s default 20,000-byte limit. The command is then marked unsuccessful and checkout fails before the workspace is ready. Use git commit --quiet for this setup step.

Patches omit tracked ignored files
Plain git add --all skips archive files that match .gitignore, even when GitHub tracks them. For example, a committed dist/index.js under an ignored dist/ directory becomes ignored and untracked in this fresh repository. Both the final tracked diff and ls-files --others --exclude-standard then omit edits to it. Force-add the extracted tree when creating the baseline so downloads preserve those changes.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Retries skip queued runs
posted.replayed returns before checking whether the saved run is still queued. If the original request exits after saving the message but before claiming its run, retrying with the same clientMessageId never starts that run. There is no worker that claims these web runs. Let retries attempt the existing atomic queued-run claim; its count already prevents duplicate execution.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Existing persistence test breaks
The new $queryRaw and agentSessionMessage.update calls break reference-persistence.test.ts. Its mock passes db directly into the transaction callback but defines neither method. The first postSessionMessage call therefore throws before its assertions. Update that mock for both new calls and keep its saved metadata in sync.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Valid file reads exceed limits
The file helpers can produce more output than runBounded allows. Reading 16,000 bytes of Chinese text produces over 30,000 bytes after Python’s default json.dumps escapes it, exceeding the 20,000-byte limit. Search results can exceed it even with ASCII text. Bound the serialized output or give these helpers an output limit that fits their promised results.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Failed rows block cleanup
Cleanup always selects the same two oldest eligible rows. If both keep returning non-404 provider errors, they stay eligible and occupy both slots on every cron run. No later workspace gets recovered or deleted, including workspaces in other organizations. Rotate failed attempts or continue through a bounded page so two failing rows cannot block all cleanup.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Cleanup outlasts the request
The 450-second work timeout does not leave enough room for the allowed E2B cleanup steps. savePatch can spend about 70 seconds stopping, 60 seconds resuming, and 20 seconds exporting. close can then spend another 70 seconds stopping again. After a long turn and slow provider calls, that exceeds the route’s 600-second limit and can interrupt cleanup before the lease is released. Give cleanup one deadline and skip export when too little time remains.
