fix: treat inline equations as atomic tokens in word-level diff - #26
Inline equations are now consumed as a single token up to the closing $, matching how block equations are already handled. A modified
equation renders as a whole-equation deletion plus insertion.
Inline equations and backslash escape sequences are treated as indivisible text during comparisons, preventing their contents from being fragmented.
Dollar signs inside escaped characters or quoted strings no longer affect equation boundaries. An unclosed equation opener remains a single-character token.
Confirmed that removing an inline equation produces a single deletion span and continues to render as valid Typst.

Fixessou1118#25
The tokenizer now treats inline equations and backslash escape sequences as atomic tokens. It skips escaped characters and quoted-string dollar signs when finding an equation’s closing delimiter. Tests cover tokenization, generated diff spans, and Typst parsing.
Changes: Inline equation tokenization
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Tokenizer equation and escape handling src/diff.rs, tests/integration.rs
tokenize_mixed groups closed inline equations and backslash escapes into tokens. Unclosed dollar signs remain single-character tokens. Unit and integration tests cover escaped and quoted dollars, deletion spans, and successful Typst parsing.
Inline equations are now diffed as whole units, which fixes the unbalanced-delimiter failure reported in issue #25 for ordinary equations. Two rare edge cases can still produce malformed Typst: a literal $ inside a block comment in an equation, and a nested equation inside embedded code in an equation. Neither blocks merging, but the nested-equation case is a regression for that input and is worth a follow-up fix.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix: treat inline equations as atomic tokens in word-level diff" matches the main change. The diff makes tokenize_mixed consume inline $...$ equations as single tokens, and the linked issue #25 asks for this same behavior. The title is specific and concise. It names the component (word-level diff) and the fix (atomic equation tokens). The title does not mention the escape-sequence handling, but that is a secondary part of the change.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #25 requires tokenize_mixed to keep each inline $...$ equation atomic and to render a changed equation as one deletion plus one insertion. src/diff.rs adds $ tokenization through find_closing_dollar, skips escaped dollars and quoted strings, and falls back safely for an unclosed opener. tests/integration.rs verifies the issue example as one deletion and verifies valid Typst syntax. The token behavior also supports whole-token replacement for a changed equation.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within issue #25. Escape-sequence handling and quoted-dollar handling prevent the new inline-equation branch from fragmenting or falsely closing Typst syntax. The added integration test covers the reported failure and output validity. No unrelated block-matching or feature change is shown.

Pull request overview
This PR updates the word-level diff tokenizer to treat inline Typst equations ($...$) as a single atomic token, preventing diffs from splitting equations into multiple deletion/insertion spans and producing invalid Typst output (e.g., unclosed $ delimiters).
Changes:
Extend tokenize_mixed to consume inline equations as one token up to the closing $.
Align inline-equation behavior with existing atomic-token handling for other Typst constructs (e.g., #func[...], @ref, <label>).

A `$` preceded by a backslash is a literal dollar sign in markup, not a
math delimiter.
Also add unit tests for the atomic equation token and the escaped case.

The new $ handling mis-detects escaping with multiple backslashes and can prematurely terminate on escaped \\$ inside math, which can still lead to invalid tokenization.
Once you've addressed the issues Copilot identified, you can request another Copilot review.
`\\$x$` has an even number of backslashes, so the `$` is a real
opening delimiter; `$a \$ b$` contains an escaped dollar sign that
must not terminate the equation early. Count trailing backslashes
with a small helper and treat the `$` as escaped only when the count
is odd.
Tests cover both cases.

Hi @imphil, thanks for the pointer! I checked out #28 and ran the #25 example through it, but the output is unchanged and compilation still fails with unclosed delimiter.
Looking at the diff, #28 makes backslash escapes and backtick raw text atomic, but there's no $ branch in tokenize_mixed, so inline equations are still split at whitespace, which this PR fixes

Sorry for the slow review. I've had a lot going on personally and couldn't get to this sooner. Thanks for your patience, and for tracking this down with such a clear write-up in #25! I can confirm this fixes the original example. The output now compiles with typst compile.
However, I found a couple of regressions. These inputs compile on main but fail on this branch:

Use `$HOME` and then run it now. → Use `$PATH` and then run it later.

Details and suggestions are in the inline comments. It would also be great to have an integration test in tests/integration.rs using the #25 example, similar to test_inline_footnote_ref_to_funccall.
Raw-text handling overlaps with #28, so I'll coordinate the merge order. I'll squash-merge this, so don't worry about the commit history. Thanks again!

A moderate tokenizer bug still lets dollar signs inside backtick-delimited raw spans cross into later equations, potentially generating invalid Typst output.

Pull the closing-delimiter scan into `find_closing_dollar`, which scans
forward like `skip_balanced`, skipping escaped characters and quoted
strings. An unclosed `$` now yields a one-character token instead of
swallowing the rest of the paragraph, and a `$` inside a math string no
longer ends the equation.
Split the tokenizer tests into one per case and add an integration test
for the sou1118#25 example.

🔵 Needs a closer look
An active moderate issue causes escaped dollar signs to be misparsed as equation delimiters, breaking literal-dollar rendering and requiring a code fix plus regression coverage.

Thanks for the quick turnaround! This looks much better: find_closing_dollar is clean, the quoted-string case is handled, and the new tests are great.
One regression is left, though. Removing preceding_backslashes also dropped the check on the opening$, so an escaped \$ in markup now starts an equation when a real one follows later in the paragraph:
old: It costs \$5 and then $x + y$ ok.
new: It costs \$6 and then $x + z$ ok.
This produces It costs \#diff-deleted[$5 and then $]..., which fails with unclosed delimiter (it compiles on main). The leftover \ also escapes the # of the diff call.
The simplest fix is probably to make \X a single atomic token in tokenize_mixed:
}elseif c == '\\'{let start = i;
i += c_len;if i < s.len(){
i += s[i..].chars().next().unwrap().len_utf8();}
tokens.push(&s[start..i]);}
This is the same branch #28 adds, so the two should merge cleanly later. Could you also add back a test for \$5 and $x$?
Deferring the raw-text case to #28 sounds good to me. Thanks!
An escaped `\$` in markup was opening an equation scan now that the opening `$`
is no longer checked for a preceding backslash. Treat `\x` as a single token so
the backslash and the character it escapes always land in the same diff span.
I added back the \x branch as you sketched it, plus the \$5 and $x$ test. Your example now renders as \$#diff-deleted[5]#diff-added[6] and compiles. Pushed in 6918db1.

Skip embedded # code when scanning an inline equation.
find_closing_dollar ends an equation at the first unescaped $. It does not skip # code arguments such as #text[...]. For $a + #text[$x$]$, the token ends at the nested opening $, leaving $a + #text[$. If a changes, render_spans wraps that token in #diff-deleted[...] and #diff-added[...]. escape_content does not close the unmatched [, so the rendered output can have unbalanced brackets and $. Before this change, #text[$x$] stayed one token, so this input did not split.

Preserve math syntax when rendering deleted equations.

Thanks! Confirmed: the \$5 ... $x + y$ case compiles now, and everything else I tried still looks good. Approving.
I'll open a follow-up issue for the raw-text case (`$HOME` and $x$) so it doesn't get lost until #28 lands. Thanks again for sticking with this through the review!
