Author's Note: ⚠️⚠️ Please review carefully, this PR is AI-assisted and, although I've reviewed it manually, it may contain errors!

Object paths were built ad hoc at each call site, and several sites ignored the tenant component:

  • Retention built {stream}/{date} instead of {tenant}/{stream}/{date}, so a named tenant's expired data was never deleted while a same-named stream under the default tenant could be deleted instead (cross-tenant data loss). The named tenant's manifests were removed from the snapshot first, leaving the surviving objects unreferenced.
  • LocalFS/GCS/Azure list_dates/list_hours/list_minutes and delete_stream ignored tenant_id, so tenant listings were empty or operated on the wrong prefix.

Introduce tenant_prefix/stream_prefix as the single source of truth for tenant path scoping (default tenant = no prefix) and use them from retention, all four backends, and the metadata/path builders (stream data, schema, stream.json, tombstone, filters, alerts, dashboards, manifest partitions, and the base metastore stream.json path).

Add regression tests covering stream_prefix scoping and tenant-scoped retention deletion.

Fixes #1812

This PR has:

  • been tested to ensure log ingestion and log query works.
  • added comments explaining the "why" and the intent of the code wherever would not be obvious for an unfamiliar reader.
  • added documentation for new or modified features or behaviors.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Tenant-scoped data is now consistently separated when listing, deleting, and accessing streams and related stored data across supported storage systems.
    • Operations for the default tenant continue to use unprefixed paths, helping prevent its data from being confused with tenant-scoped data.

Object paths were built ad hoc at each call site, and several sites
ignored the tenant component:

- Retention built `{stream}/{date}` instead of
`{tenant}/{stream}/{date}`, so a named tenant's expired data was
never deleted while a same-named stream under the default tenant
could be deleted instead (cross-tenant data loss). The named tenant's
manifests were removed from the snapshot first, leaving the surviving
  objects unreferenced.
- LocalFS/GCS/Azure `list_dates`/`list_hours`/`list_minutes` and
`delete_stream` ignored `tenant_id`, so tenant listings were empty or
  operated on the wrong prefix.

Introduce `tenant_prefix`/`stream_prefix` as the single source of truth
for tenant path scoping (default tenant = no prefix) and use them from
retention, all four backends, and the metadata/path builders (stream
data, schema, stream.json, tombstone, filters, alerts, dashboards,
manifest partitions, and the base metastore stream.json path).

Add regression tests covering `stream_prefix` scoping and tenant-scoped
retention deletion.

Walkthrough

Tenant and stream path construction now uses shared prefix helpers. Named tenants use tenant-qualified paths, while absent and default tenants use unprefixed paths. Storage listing, deletion, retention, and metadata path callers were updated. LocalFS regression tests cover tenant-scoped listing and deletion.

Changes

Tenant-aware storage paths

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared prefix rules and metadata paths
src/storage/object_storage.rs, src/catalog/mod.rs, src/metastore/metastores/object_store_metastore.rs, src/users/dashboards.rs
tenant_prefix and stream_prefix define tenant-aware roots. Object metadata paths and catalog, metastore, and dashboard paths use tenant_prefix.
Storage operations and retention
src/storage/azure_blob.rs, src/storage/gcs.rs, src/storage/localfs.rs, src/storage/s3.rs, src/storage/retention.rs
Storage listing and stream deletion use tenant-aware stream prefixes. Retention deletion uses the tenant-qualified prefix. LocalFS regression tests cover tenant-scoped listing, prefix construction, and retention deletion.

Priority: ⬆️ High

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: High

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 78fd7

Requests that explicitly name the default tenant now save stream metadata, manifests and alert states without a tenant folder, but several read paths still look inside the DEFAULT_TENANT folder. That data can then seem to be missing. Those readers should use the same prefix rule before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 78fd7

The change improves tenant-scoped deletion, but explicitly supplied default-tenant metadata moves to unprefixed locations while several bulk readers retain different path rules. This can split persisted state and complicate recovery or rollback. No new cross-tenant authorization bypass was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · observed: Default-tenant normalization is incomplete across persistent-state producers and consumers. For Some(DEFAULT_TENANT), schema and alert-state writers now use unprefixed keys, but bulk readers still address DEFAULT_TENANT-prefixed keys. This observed contract divergence can hide newly written state or expose stale legacy state through different APIs. Runtime reachability and the presence of affected legacy objects remain partly unresolved; this is not a verified authorization bypass.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported regression is a default-tenant persistent-state visibility issue, not demonstrated access to another named tenant. Conversely, the retention change reduces the risk of deleting the default tenant's same-named stream when cleaning a named tenant.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Session-based tenant extraction maps the default sentinel to None. Middleware enforces authorization and header errors before awaiting the downstream request. These controls limit conclusions about attacker reachability from the raw tenant-header extractor.
  • observed — Outbound-policy replacement already persists the default tenant using None, and policy loading uses the same path helper. The inspected normal policy flow does not support a newly introduced security-policy relocation or downgrade.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Alert-state updates read and write the same helper-selected key, suppress unchanged-state writes, and tolerate missing objects during deletion. They do not read the legacy default-prefixed key after normalization, so legacy history continuity is not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply the same canonical tenant-root rule to bulk readers and define compatibility for existing default-prefixed objects, including precedence when both locations exist and behavior during rollback.

Normalize the remaining default-tenant readers.

When tenant_id is Some(DEFAULT_TENANT), this helper places stream metadata and manifests at unprefixed paths. ObjectStoreMetastore::get_all_schemas, get_manifest_files_for_dates, and list_streams still search beneath DEFAULT_TENANT/. get_alert_states also searches there after alert_state_json_path writes an unprefixed file. These readers cannot find the new files for an explicit default tenant. Apply the same tenant-prefix rule to those read paths.

Hey @SegFaultAX
Thanks a lot for opening this PR and bringing this issue to light. For now we'll just go ahead and make the smallest possible change to address this rather than modifying the entire tenant path creation flow.
