A claim on an idempotency key becomes reclaimable once its 60 second lease runs out. Recording an outcome (complete) and releasing a claim (release) matched the row by the four-part key and state = 'in_flight' alone, which says a claim is in flight but not whose it is.
So a request that ran past its lease did harm when it finally finished:
its complete matched the reclaimed row and stored its own response as the key's, so later retries replayed the superseded response instead of the newer request's
its release deleted the reclaimed row, which let a third request run while the second was still going
CodeRabbit raised both in its review of #547. Both predate that PR; it is not changed by it and they are fixed here, as a change of their own.
How
Each claim carries a token.
claim returns Claim::Claimed(ClaimToken). The store mints the token (a UUID v7) when it grants the claim, and a reclaim replaces it.
complete and release take the token and return Settled::Applied or Settled::Superseded. An implementation writes only while that claim is still the key's, and answers Superseded, having written nothing, once it is not.
In Postgres the token is a new column, and the two statements add AND claim_token = $n. Superseded is the case where a statement touched no row, which covers a reclaimed row and a swept one alike.
The middleware carries the token from the claim to the outcome. On Superseded it logs one warning and sends the response unchanged; there is no new status and no new metric.
A UUID rather than a counter: a row can be swept and the key claimed afresh, and a counter would start again from its first value, where a token is never repeated.
What this does and does not fix
It stops a stale call from corrupting a newer claim. It does not stop the handler running twice once a lease expires on a live request; that comes from the lease design, and extending leases is a separate feature. The warning says so when it happens.
Migration
ops/pg/0044_idempotency_claim_token.sql adds claim_token UUID NOT NULL DEFAULT gen_random_uuid(). Rows that exist are completed (a token no one will present) or in_flight under a process that no longer exists (a token no one holds, which is correct; their lease reclaims them), so the default only has to give them some value. The table's grant is table-level and covers the column.
The number is 0044, the next free one on main, because this lands first and is released ahead of the other migrations. The two open pull requests that add one (#532 and #489) each claim 0044 as well, and will need 0045 and 0046 on their own branches; an unapplied migration can be renamed safely.
Stacked
This is based on fix/idempotency-store-timeout (#547), which adds the bounded helper in the same middleware file. It needs retargeting to main before #547 is merged.
Tests
In crates/dpp-dal/tests/pg_idempotency.rs, against a real Postgres, using the existing backdate_for_test to run a lease out without sleeping:
In the middleware, a_superseded_claim_does_not_change_the_response.
Run first with the token stored but not matched: the two stale-call tests failed, each with Applied where Superseded was expected, because the late call hit the newer claim's row. They pass with the match. The swept-claim test and the middleware test pin behaviour that does not depend on the match, so they pass either way.
The seven implementations of the store port in tests are updated, and MemStore in idempotency_flow.rs now honours tokens so that it behaves like the real store.
just check is green: 1618 tests passed, 3 skipped. The Docker-backed tier, which just check only compiles, passes in full: dpp-dal 119, dpp-vault 517 (12 skipped), dpp-plugin-host 71, dpp-node 371.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Prevented late requests from overwriting or releasing a newer idempotency claim after it has been reclaimed.
Responses are preserved even when a claim is superseded; a warning is logged for these cases.
Idempotency claims now carry unique tokens. Completion and release operations use those tokens to avoid modifying a claim that has since been reclaimed. Middleware preserves handler responses when settlement is superseded.

The store API adds ClaimToken and Settled, and requires a token for completion and release. The migration adds a UUID claim_token column.
PostgreSQL claim and settlement crates/dpp-dal/src/pg/repo_idempotency.rs, crates/dpp-dal/tests/pg_idempotency.rs
The repository assigns a token on claim or reclaim and restricts completion and release to matching in-flight tokens. Integration tests cover stale and missing claims.
Middleware settlement and store implementations crates/dpp-common/src/idempotency/middleware.rs, crates/dpp-common/tests/idempotency_flow.rs, crates/dpp-integrator/src/handlers/import.rs, crates/dpp-integrator/src/middleware.rs, crates/dpp-vault/src/middleware/idempotency.rs
Middleware passes tokens to settlement operations and logs superseded results. Store test implementations use the updated contract, and tests verify that superseded settlements preserve response statuses.

Token-bound settlement protects newer claims. The remaining issue is a misleading warning for purged claims; correcting that diagnostic and strengthening regression assertions are bounded follow-ups, not merge blockers.

Assert the Settled result of the release on the completed row.
Line 181 discards the Settled value. The release on a completed row matches no in_flight row, so the DELETE removes zero rows and release returns Settled::Superseded. An implementation that returned Settled::Applied here would still pass the replay check on lines 182-183, so the test does not pin this result. The assertion on line 177 already compares Settled values with assert_eq!, so the same form applies here.

Review comment at @crates/dpp-dal/tests/pg_idempotency.rs at line 181:
Update the completed-row release assertion in the idempotency test to verify
that repo.release returns Settled::Superseded. Keep the existing replay check
unchanged.
Assert the superseded warning in a_superseded_claim_does_not_change_the_response.
The test checks only the response status and the handler run count. If the Superseded arm of log_settlement became a no-op, the test would still pass. That arm emits the only warning for a request that outlived its lease, which can mean the handler ran twice. Capture the WARN events during the request and assert that at least one is emitted for each status.
🧪 Suggested test change
Add this helper to the test module:
/// Counts `WARN` events while a test subscriber is installed.structWarnCounter(std::sync::Arc<std::sync::atomic::AtomicUsize>);impl<S: tracing::Subscriber> tracing_subscriber::Layer<S>forWarnCounter{fnon_event(&self,event:&tracing::Event<'_>, _: tracing_subscriber::layer::Context<'_,S>){if*event.metadata().level() == tracing::Level::WARN{self.0.fetch_add(1, std::sync::atomic::Ordering::SeqCst);}}}
Then update the test loop:
] {
+ use tracing::instrument::WithSubscriber;+ use tracing_subscriber::layer::SubscriberExt;+ let warned = std::sync::Arc::new(std::sync::atomic::AtomicUsize::new(0));+ let subscriber = tracing_subscriber::registry().with(WarnCounter(warned.clone()));
let (app, ran) = keyed_app(SupersededStore, status);
- let response = send_keyed(app).await;+ let response = send_keyed(app).with_subscriber(subscriber).await;
assert_eq!(response.status(), status);
assert_eq!(ran.load(std::sync::atomic::Ordering::SeqCst), 1);
+ assert!(warned.load(std::sync::atomic::Ordering::SeqCst) > 0);
}
