NIPS-CERN is a research and development group working at the intersection of High Energy Physics, scientific computing, and high-performance hardware and software systems, in collaboration with CERN.
We operate from two bases:
- Route Salam, Geneva, Switzerland
- Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering (PPEE), Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), Minas Gerais, Brazil
We design and build processor architectures, compilers, graphical interfaces, FPGA-based instrumentation, and research support tools, including:
- SAPHO, Scalable-Architecture Processor for Hardware Optimization
- YANC, Yet Another NIPS-CERN Compiler, the compiler toolchain of the SAPHO ecosystem
- AURORA, the IDE for SAPHO: write C±, compile, simulate and inspect, with Aurora Intelligence
- HITS, Hardware Impulse Train Synthesizer, a real-time FPGA simulator of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter readout
- CGV, Calorimeter Geometry Viewer, 3D calorimeter event visualisation in any browser
- nipscernweb, our institutional website at nipscern.com
- surfer-aurora, the Surfer fork we maintain for AURORA, on GitLab
Beyond software, our work includes system architecture design, hardware and software co-design, educational tools, and computational support for scientific experiments.
A defining feature of NIPS-CERN is the direct involvement of undergraduate students, who contribute to real research projects in High Energy Physics and scientific computing, in collaboration with CERN and its experiments.
Our mission is to integrate engineering, software development, particle physics, art and logic into concrete tools, architectures, and systems that support scientific research and experimentation.
