Add Sandbox and Domain names; deprecate the Inbox and SendingDomain names - #139
new names: Mailtrap::SandboxesAPI and Mailtrap::Sandbox, Mailtrap::DomainsAPI and Mailtrap::Domain, Mailtrap::Client.new(sandbox_id:) and the ActionMailer sandbox_id setting
SandboxMessagesAPI and SandboxAttachmentsAPI take a sandbox_id and expose #sandbox_id; CompanyInfoAPI methods take a domain_id
a sandbox client without an ID now raises sandbox_id is required for sandbox API
requests go to the same endpoints as before (/inboxes, /sending_domains), so responses and the fields that mirror them, such as SandboxMessage#inbox_id, Project#inboxes and the sending_domain_ids: stats filter, don't change
Email Inbound inboxes are not renamed
every old name still works and prints a warning, the renamed classes, arguments and readers once per process: "[mailtrap] X is deprecated and will be removed in a future major release; use Y instead."
InboxesAPI and SendingDomainsAPI are subclasses of the new classes that warn when built
Client.new(inbox_id:), the ActionMailer inbox_id setting and the #inbox_id readers on Client, SandboxMessagesAPI and SandboxAttachmentsAPI warn and map to sandbox_id; different inbox_id and sandbox_id values raise ArgumentError
Mailtrap::Inbox and Mailtrap::SendingDomain are the same structs under deprecate_constant, so Ruby warns about them only when deprecation warnings are enabled (ruby -W:deprecated), and not only once per process
each warning points at the caller's line
README: the sandbox example uses sandbox_id, a new "Renamed APIs" table maps old names to new ones, and the examples move to examples/sandboxes_api.rb and examples/domains_api.rb.
How to test
You'll need an API token and an account ID with a sandbox that has a message in it, and a domain.
Send to a sandbox with the new name: Mailtrap::Client.new(api_key: token, sandbox: true, sandbox_id: <id>).send(mail) delivers the email to that sandbox.
Send with the old name: the same call with inbox_id: <id> still delivers the email and prints [mailtrap] Mailtrap::Client.new(inbox_id:) is deprecated … once.
ActionMailer: mailtrap_settings = { sandbox: true, sandbox_id: <id> } delivers to the sandbox; inbox_id: <id> instead still delivers and warns.
List sandboxes: Mailtrap::SandboxesAPI.new(account_id, client).list returns Mailtrap::Sandbox structs; Mailtrap::InboxesAPI returns the same list and warns once.
Messages: Mailtrap::SandboxMessagesAPI.new(account_id, <sandbox id>, client).list returns the sandbox's messages; calling #inbox_id on it returns the ID and warns.
List domains: Mailtrap::DomainsAPI.new(account_id, client).list returns Mailtrap::Domain structs; Mailtrap::SendingDomainsAPI returns the same list and warns once.
Company info: Mailtrap::CompanyInfoAPI.new(account_id, client).get(<domain id>) returns the domain's company info as before.
Old structs: ruby -W:deprecated -e 'require "mailtrap"; p Mailtrap::Inbox == Mailtrap::Sandbox' prints true after constant Mailtrap::Inbox is deprecated.
Added Domains and Sandboxes APIs for managing domains and sandboxes, including setup, configuration, and message-management actions.
Updated sandbox sending examples and settings to use sandbox_id.
Compatibility
Older Inbox and Sending Domain names remain available as deprecated aliases, with warnings directing callers to Sandboxes and Domains. The README notes that deprecated names are scheduled for removal in the next major release.
Documentation
Updated terminology and setup guidance to reference Domains and Sandboxes.
Decisions:
- Mailtrap now calls Email Sandbox inboxes "sandboxes" and sending domains "domains", and the SDK follows
- Requests keep the /inboxes and /sending_domains paths: a message read through /sandboxes returns sandbox_id instead of inbox_id, so moving paths waits for the next API version
- Attributes and filters that mirror API fields (SandboxMessage#inbox_id, Project#inboxes, inbox_ids:, sending_domain_ids:) keep their names
- Cassettes are renamed, not re-recorded, since no request changes
- Client.new(inbox_id:) and the #inbox_id readers stay as aliases that warn once per process
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Decisions:
- InboxesAPI and SendingDomainsAPI subclass the new classes and warn once when built, so existing code keeps working until the next major release
- Inbox and SendingDomain are constant aliases marked with deprecate_constant; Ruby shows that warning only when deprecation warnings are enabled
- BaseAPI subclasses now inherit supported_options and response_class, which the alias classes rely on

Adds Sandbox and SandboxesAPI, maps project responses to sandbox objects, and adds examples and operation tests.
Uses sandbox_id in client, message, and attachment APIs. Adds deprecated aliases and warnings for former names, with compatibility tests. The README documents renamed APIs and warning behavior.
The rename and compatibility changes have no established merge-blocking defect. Adding the warning-location assertion would provide bounded additional regression protection and can be handled as follow-up.

Explanation
The title names the two main changes: adding the Sandbox and Domain names, and deprecating the Inbox and SendingDomain names. The summary shows SandboxesAPI, Sandbox, DomainsAPI, and Domain are added, while InboxesAPI, Inbox, SendingDomainsAPI, and SendingDomain become deprecated aliases. The title is specific and matches the main change. It is 73 characters, which is slightly long but acceptable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's Motivation, Changes, and How to test sections. The Motivation explains the rename and the deprecated aliases. The Changes section lists the new names, deprecation behavior, and README updates. The How to test section has concrete, checkable steps. The template's Images and GIFs section is missing. This section is not critical for an SDK rename, so the omission does not block the check. The unchecked test boxes are expected before merge.

The maps response data to Domain objects example passes when list returns [], because all matches an empty collection. A change that sends the request and then discards the mapped result would keep this example green. The VCR cassette does not catch that change, because the recorded request is still consumed. Adding a nonempty check makes the example fail in that case.

Update the “maps response data to Domain objects” example to assert that `list`
is nonempty before checking its elements are `Mailtrap::Domain` instances. Keep
the existing type assertion.
Assert the mapped sandbox record in the `#list` example.
Assert the mapped sandbox record in the #list example.
The example is named maps response data to Sandbox objects, but all(be_a(Mailtrap::Sandbox)) also passes for an empty array. A list that returns [] passes this example, so a regression that drops the mapped record would not fail the suite. The recorded response contains one sandbox with ID 3715083 and name My Inbox. Check that record directly:

Update the `#list` example to assert that the returned collection contains
exactly the recorded sandbox with ID 3715083 and name “My Inbox”; do not rely
only on `all(be_a(Mailtrap::Sandbox))`, which also passes for an empty
collection.
The spec checks only construction and list. InboxesAPI inherits create and update from SandboxesAPI, and both read supported_options. InboxesAPI gets that value only from the inherited hook in lib/mailtrap/base_api.rb. If the hook stops copying it, create and update raise NoMethodError on nil, and this spec still passes.
Add examples that call create and update through Mailtrap::InboxesAPI. Assert Mailtrap::Sandbox results, not Mailtrap::Inbox.
Reuse the existing sandbox cassettes by explicit name, with the same request arguments as the matching examples in spec/mailtrap/sandboxes_api_spec.rb:
If the recorded requests do not match the account ID this spec uses, stub the requests instead. Do not restore the removed Mailtrap_InboxesAPI cassette names, because those cassettes no longer exist.

Add an `#update` example for the deprecated Mailtrap::SendingDomainsAPI alias.
Add an #update example for the deprecated Mailtrap::SendingDomainsAPI alias.
The head spec covers construction, the deprecation warning, and list only. update is inherited through the alias, and no spec calls it. A change that stops the inherited hook from copying supported_options would leave update failing at runtime with a TypeError. The suite would still pass.
Add an update example through Mailtrap::SendingDomainsAPI. Before reusing a cassette, confirm that it exists under spec/fixtures/vcr_cassettes.

Add an `update` example through `Mailtrap::SendingDomainsAPI` alongside the
existing construction and `list` examples, verifying the inherited update path
works without a `TypeError`. Reuse a VCR cassette only if its fixture already
exists; otherwise use an appropriate available cassette.
- The setting was passed straight to Client, so its warning named
Client.new(inbox_id:), which a Rails app never calls.
- The same sandbox ID given once as a string and once as an integer
no longer counts as a conflict.
- Fix the SandboxesAPI and Sandbox docs: create needs project_id, delete
returns the deleted sandbox, and max_message_size is in bytes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- InboxesAPI and SendingDomainsAPI get supported_options only from the
BaseAPI inherited hook, and only list was exercised through them.
- The list examples passed on an empty list.
- Every deprecation spec now checks the warning points at the caller.
- Sandbox#used is a boolean in the API, not a size in MB.
- The README said every old name warns once per process, but Ruby's
deprecate_constant warnings for Inbox and SendingDomain can repeat.
- Deprecation.warn read the set before taking the lock; the locked
add? alone does the job.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Assert the file that Ruby reports for the deprecation warning.
The helper reports a caller location. This example does not check that location. For this path, Ruby reports lib/mailtrap/action_mailer/delivery_method.rb at the line of the client_settings call. The spec should check the file. It should not check the exact line, because a line number changes with unrelated edits. The setting is read inside the gem, so the warning cannot point at the user's configuration line.

Motivation
Mailtrap now calls Email Sandbox inboxes sandboxes and sending domains domains, and the API reference documents only the new names. This gem still exposed
InboxesAPI,Inbox,inbox_id,SendingDomainsAPIandSendingDomain. It now adds the new names and keeps the old ones as deprecated aliases, so existing code keeps working. The other Mailtrap SDKs get the same rename: mailtrap/mailtrap-python#92, mailtrap/mailtrap-nodejs#180, mailtrap/mailtrap-php#88, mailtrap/mailtrap-java#91, mailtrap/mailtrap-dotnet#266 and mailtrap/mailtrap-go#39.Changes
