Executive Director of the American Society for Deaf Children. Registered nurse, policy advisor, and accessibility program lead. I work in American Sign Language most of the day as a hearing person in Deaf culture, which keeps me honest about who technology is built for.
This is a new account. I closed my previous one to protect the privacy of foster placements in my home, and I am rebuilding it here with the working documents I use rather than a greatest-hits reel.
- Accessibility at ASDC. 24 online programs, roughly 750 people in average attendance, 70 interpreters. Every class runs a visually impaired classroom alongside the standard one. Every meeting gets captioning and a transcript. Emails are screen-reader-tested before they go out, and PDFs are tagged before they are shared.
- WCAG and ADA conformance. Three years of evaluating web content and course materials against WCAG, first for a birth center and now for a national nonprofit, plus helping families write ADA complaints when something is broken and nobody will fix it.
- AI for sign language. Named NVIDIA partner on an AI sign language recognition program, running calibration sessions and writing test scenarios.
- Listening systems. Focus groups with Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs, coded open-ended survey responses, and a community of 40,000 that tells us when we get it wrong.
- Zoom. A formal accessibility feature request, escalated over six months and demonstrated live to Zoom's product team, after active speaker view and cloud recordings kept pushing signing instructors off screen. Deaf users in the room with the people who build the tool.
- Biotech advising. Several companies building hearing technology and treatments with the Deaf community ask ASDC how to do that without leaving Deaf people out of their own product. We tell them.
