feat: uloop launch --restart and --quit let Unity quit itself so it keeps the window layout - #3403
uloop launch --restart and --quit used to force-kill the Unity Editor. Unity only saves its window layout when it exits on its own, so every restart lost the layout. Restart and quit now ask the Editor to quit first and fall back to the old force-kill only when that cannot work.
What changes
Unity package: a new internal bridge command, quit-editor, answers and then calls EditorApplication.Exit(0) from the update loop half a second later.
Exit saves the window layout and discards modified scenes without the save dialog that the menu quit waits on. This was checked on Unity 2022.3.62f3 and 6000.3.15f1, including from Play Mode.
The exit runs from EditorApplication.update, not delayCall. An Editor in the background that is not repainting never runs delayCall; this was observed in an end-to-end run.
Dispatcher (launch):
The Editor answers, or the connection drops after the request arrived: wait up to 30s for the process to exit, then force-kill.
No answer within 5s (frozen main thread), a JSON-RPC error (a package that predates the command), an answer without a result, or an unreachable server: force-kill at once. An error or empty answer is checked before the disconnect classification, which would otherwise take it as a dropped connection.
V2 projects: skip the request, because their server predates it.
Output: the launch JSON gains StopMethod (Quit or ForceKill) after restart or quit, V2 restarts included, and omits it when no process was stopped. The --quit message says which happened.
Unity side:DelayedEditorExit holds the exit decision (not before the 0.5s delay, and only once); QuitEditorBridgeCommand only wires it to EditorApplication.update.
Docs: the uloop-launch skill, the help text, the README example, and the Windows restart notes now describe the quit-first behavior.
Compatibility
Protocol version: not bumped. The change only adds a command, and an older package answers it with an error, which falls back to the kill.
Older dispatcher with a newer package: it keeps force-killing, as before.
Verification
scripts/check-go-cli.sh (0 lint issues), the complexity check, the file length check, and check-skill-size all pass.
The new dispatcher tests cover the quit and kill branches with fakes, and the request classification against a loopback server. Each was mutation-checked: removing a branch makes its test fail. The one exception is the RequestDispatched guard, which no test can tell apart; without it the only cost is an extra 30s wait.
The new EditMode tests in QuitEditorBridgeCommandTests pass (5/5), including the DelayedEditorExit cases. After that refactor, launch -r and launch -q were rerun on the scratch project: both reported StopMethod: Quit, and the layout file was rewritten.
End to end, with the dist binary on a 2022.3 scratch project that has this package:
Scenario
Result
Profiler opened and the scene left dirty, then launch -r
StopMethod: Quit; the layout file was rewritten with the Profiler in it; the dirty change was not saved; the restart took 10s
Main thread blocked, then launch -q
ForceKill after 5s
Editor without the uloop package, then launch -q
ForceKill at once
Not verified: the Windows restart path, and launch -r end to end on Unity 6. On Unity 6, only Exit was checked, directly.
uloop launch --restart and --quit force-kill the Editor, which loses the
window layout the Editor only saves on a normal exit. quit-editor lets the
CLI ask the Editor to close itself instead.
- EditorApplication.Exit saves the layout and discards modified scenes
without the save dialog that the menu quit waits on
- The exit runs on the next update so the answer is written first
A force-kill loses the window layout, which Unity only saves when it exits
on its own. Restart and quit now send quit-editor first and fall back to the
old kill only when the Editor cannot take it or does not exit in time.
- The Editor took the request when it answered or dropped the connection
after the request arrived; no answer within 5s means a frozen main thread
and is killed at once
- An Editor that took the request gets 30s to exit before it is killed
- V2 projects skip the request because their server predates it
- The launch response reports StopMethod (Quit or ForceKill), and --quit
words its message to match
Agents need to know that restart keeps the window layout but drops unsaved
scene changes, when the old force-kill still happens, and how to tell which
one did from StopMethod.
An Editor in the background that is not repainting never runs delayCall,
so quit-editor answered and the Editor stayed up until launch force-killed
it. The update loop keeps running there, so the exit now waits on it for
half a second, which still lets the answer be written first.
The CLI now asks Unity to quit before force-killing an Editor when required. Launch responses report whether the previous Editor quit or was force-killed. The Editor bridge handles the quit request, and the launch documentation describes the behavior and StopMethod field.
The Editor bridge recognizes quit-editor and schedules EditorApplication.Exit(0) after 0.5 seconds. Tests check command recognition and the command name.
Graceful shutdown and fallback cli/dispatcher/internal/dispatcher/launch_unity_stop.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/dispatcher/launch_deps.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/dispatcher/launch_unity_quit_request_unix_test.go, cli/dispatcher/internal/dispatcher/launch_unity_stop_test.go
The CLI requests a quit and waits up to 30 seconds for Editor exit. If the request is rejected or the wait times out, it force-kills the process. Tests cover request outcomes, V2 projects, exit waits, and kill failures.
Launch responses include the stop method and use different messages for a quit, force-kill, or no running process. The documentation describes the quit-first behavior and StopMethod.

Issue 3174 describes a delayCall stall when the Editor is backgrounded. This change schedules the quit through EditorApplication.update instead of delayCall.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 72152
An empty Unity response can delay quit or restart by 30 seconds, and the documentation can mislead clients and Windows operators about shutdown behavior. The PR is otherwise low risk, but these corrections should be addressed.

The V2 restart path wrote its ready response without the stop method, so
a V2 restart omitted StopMethod while every other restart and quit reported
it.
Exclude JSON-RPC rejections from the disconnect fallback.
When the server rejects quit-editor with a message containing EOF, RPCError.Error() preserves that text, so IsTransportDisconnectError matches it. The dispatched request then returns true, and stopUnityProcess can wait up to 30 seconds before force-killing an Editor that rejected the request. Exclude *unityipc.RPCError before applying the disconnect fallback.

The disconnect check also matches on message text, so a rejection whose
message mentions EOF read as a dropped connection and made launch wait 30s
on an Editor that was never going to exit.
Addressed the outside-diff CodeRabbit note on launch_unity_stop.go:77 in the latest commit: a JSON-RPC rejection now returns false before the disconnect check, and TestSendUnityQuitRequestDoesNotTakeARejectionThatMentionsEOFAsAQuit covers a rejection whose message mentions EOF.

Document StopMethod as conditional.
Reachable no-process --quit and --restart responses omit StopMethod because the response field uses omitempty. The three launch skill documents list the field without describing this omission, so clients cannot rely on the documented field being present.

Minor · Document the V2 restart exception. · windows-compatibility.md:136
On Windows, restarting a V2 project skips the quit request and force-kills the Editor. The current wording tells operators that every restart first requests a quit, so they may incorrectly expect quit-first behavior for V2 projects.
Suggested fix
- Restart first asks the Editor to quit; the kill below applies only when the Editor has to be force-killed instead. Windows then kills it with `taskkill /PID <pid> /T /F` so its helper processes go down with it, instead of leaving them holding files. If `taskkill` cannot be run, restart falls back to killing the Editor process alone.+ Restart first asks a non-V2 Editor to quit; V2 projects skip that request and are force-killed. Cover the delayed editor-exit path with a focused test.
Assets/Tests/Editor/QuitEditorBridgeCommandTests.cs:8-35 tests only command recognition and the literal command name. A regression that stops QuitEditorBridgeCommand.Execute() from registering its EditorApplication.update callback or calling EditorApplication.Exit(0) would pass these tests. Extract the scheduling and exit request behind a testable seam, then assert the delayed callback requests exit with code 0. This is a recommended testability refactor, not a current production defect.

The disconnect check takes an empty JSON-RPC result as a dropped
connection, so launch waited 30s on an Editor that answered without
running the quit, while the quit handler always returns a result.
…uest
The skill listed StopMethod as always present, though a quit or restart
that found no Editor omits it, and the Windows notes said every restart
asks the Editor to quit, though a V2 project's Editor is force-killed.
The tests only checked how quit-editor is routed, so a change that exited
before the answer was written, exited twice, or never exited would pass.
DelayedEditorExit holds the deadline and exit-once decision; the command
keeps only the EditorApplication wiring.
Addressed the rest of the latest CodeRabbit review:
StopMethod omitted when no process was stopped: documented in the launch skill (789fb6c).
V2 restart exception in docs/windows-compatibility.md: the bullet now says a V2 project is not asked to quit (789fb6c).
Delayed exit coverage (nitpick): the deadline and exit-once decision moved into DelayedEditorExit, with tests for before the deadline, at the deadline (exit code 0), and a second check after exiting (65e0d94). QuitEditorBridgeCommand keeps only the EditorApplication wiring.
