Fixes #76

  • Normalize remote paths for all operations
  • Use stringify_path to support path objects while preserving raw bytes paths
  • Document that protocol-prefixed paths are unsupported when path_encoding=None
  • Parameterize regression tests across plain paths, ssh:// paths, and sftp:// paths

Validation with python 3.15:

  • pytest: 91 passed

I manually triggered the test.yml workflow in my fork, but the Python 3.9 job failed during setup:

Error: The version '3.9' with architecture 'x64' was not found for Ubuntu 26.04.

It looks like ubuntu-latest now uses Ubuntu 26.04, for which actions/setup-python does not provide a Python 3.9 build.

Would it make sense to switch to uv for Python installation and test execution so we can retain Python 3.9 coverage on the latest Ubuntu runner?
