Walkthrough

Email template creation and editing now use MUI forms, imperative submission, popup workflows, reusable JSON editing, updated routing, and explicit loading and validity state.

Changes: Email template management

Layer / File(s) Summary
MUI template form and lookup controls
src/components/forms/..., src/components/inputs/..., src/i18n/en.json
The form uses MUI controls, exposes submit through a ref, reports MJML validity, confirms HTML-to-MJML mode changes, and handles incomplete lookup values safely.
Reusable JSON editing dialog
src/pages/emails/email-template-json-dialog.js, src/pages/emails/edit-email-template-popup.js, src/pages/emails/__tests__/email-template-json-dialog.test.js
The dialog formats, edits, validates, and returns parsed template JSON. The popup uses the dialog for JSON updates.
Popup editing and routed page integration
src/pages/emails/email-template-list-page.js, src/pages/emails/edit-email-template-page.js, src/pages/emails/edit-email-template-popup.js, src/pages/emails/__tests__/...
The list page manages create and edit popups, related data, saves, refreshes, and resets. The routed page uses hooks, guarded loading, ref-based saving, validity-aware controls, and the shared JSON dialog.
Route and save behavior
src/layouts/email-layout.js, src/actions/email-actions.js, src/actions/__tests__/email-actions.test.js, src/layouts/__tests__/email-layout.test.js
Editor routes use updated matching rules. New template creation no longer redirects after saving.

@tomrndom Popups are out of the question here. From now on, all CRUDs should follow the legacy nested-page pattern.

@tomrndom Confirmed, and it's a regression against master. Master's compile effect ran on the seeded default_mjml_content when a new template mounted. Here mjmlEdited stays false until the MJML is typed into, so html_content stays empty: "Show HTML" opens a blank editor, and saving the untouched sample sends html_content: "". I checked that the real mjml-browser compiles the sample cleanly with the same strict options (0 errors), so skipping it isn't protecting anything.

Suggested fix: treat a new template as edited:

const mjmlEdited =
  !entity.id ||
  values.mjml_content !== formik.initialValues.mjml_content ||
  historyVersion !== "";

Regression test for email-template-form.test.js. It fails on the current code and passes with the fix:

it("compiles the seeded sample MJML of a new template", async () => {
  mjml2html.mockImplementation(() => ({ html: "<p>compiled sample</p>" }));
  const newEntity = { ...mjmlEntity, id: 0, mjml_content: "", html_content: "" };
  render(<EmailTemplateForm {...baseProps(newEntity)} />);

  await act(async () => {
    fireEvent.click(screen.getByText("emails.display_html"));
  });

  expect(screen.getByTestId("editor-html_content")).toHaveValue("<p>compiled sample</p>");
});

} catch (err) {
return { htmlContent: null, error: err };
}
}, [values.mjml_content, historyVersion, mjmlEdited, isChildTemplate]);

@tomrndom Confirmed. mjmlCompileResult returns null while mjmlEditor is false, and since mjmlEditor isn't a dependency, it doesn't recompute when switching back. The stale mjmlRenderError therefore survives.

Repro: pick an MJML history version that doesn't compile (Save disables), switch to HTML, pick "Current version", switch back to MJML. The stored MJML is restored but Save stays disabled. The same stale error also replaces the preview while in HTML mode, because renderPreviewBody doesn't check the mode.

Suggested fix: add mjmlEditor to the memo deps (the mjmlEdited guard already keeps unchanged content from compiling, so the "bare mode switch" case is still covered and the existing test for it keeps passing), and gate the preview error on the mode:

}, [values.mjml_content, historyVersion, mjmlEdited, isChildTemplate, mjmlEditor]);
if (mjmlEditor && mjmlRenderError?.message) {

Please also drop the "mjmlEditor is deliberately not a dep" line from the comment above.

Regression test for email-template-form.test.js (add import { screen, within } from "@testing-library/react" and import { EMAIL_TEMPLATE_TYPE_MJML } from "../../../utils/constants"). It fails on the current code and passes with the fix:

it("re-enables Save after Current version restores the stored MJML from HTML mode", async () => {
  mjml2html.mockImplementation(() => {
    throw new Error("Malformed MJML");
  });
  const entity = {
    ...mjmlEntity,

        html_url: "https://example.com/abc123"
      }
    ]
  };
  render(<EmailTemplateForm {...baseProps(entity)} />);
  const save = () => screen.getByRole("button", { name: "general.save" });
  const pickVersion = async (label) => {

      );
    });

      fireEvent.click(

      );

@tomrndom Confirmed. queryTemplates ends in .catch(fetchErrorHandler) without calling callback, so a failed search leaves loading true forever. Clearing the input doesn't reset it either.

Suggested fix: settle the callback in the action rather than adding an error callback. queryTemplates is also the queryFunction of the email log GridFilter (email-log-list-page.helpers.js:50), which only knows (input, callback), and settling with [] keeps that contract for both callers:

.catch((err) => {
  fetchErrorHandler(err);
  callback([]);
});

…and in handleInputChange, reset loading on clear (see the requestSeq change in the next thread):

if (!input) {
  requestSeq.current += 1;
  setOptions([]);
  setLoading(false);
  return;
}

Regression tests. Both fail on the current code and pass with the fix:

// src/actions/__tests__/email-actions.test.js
it("settles the callback with no options when the search request fails", async () => {
  jest.useFakeTimers();
  global.fetch = jest.fn(() => Promise.reject(new Error("network down")));
  const callback = jest.fn();

  queryTemplates("welcome", callback);
  jest.runAllTimers();
  await flushPromises();

  expect(callback).toHaveBeenCalledWith([]);
  delete global.fetch;
  jest.useRealTimers();
});
// src/components/inputs/__tests__/email-template-input.test.js
it("clears the loading state when the search input is emptied", async () => {
  queryTemplates.mockImplementation(() => {}); // request never settles
  render(<EmailTemplateInput id="parent" value={null} onChange={() => {}} />);

  const input = screen.getByRole("combobox");
  await userEvent.type(input, "w");
  expect(screen.getByRole("progressbar")).toBeInTheDocument();

  await userEvent.clear(input);
  await waitFor(() =>
    expect(screen.queryByRole("progressbar")).not.toBeInTheDocument()
  );
});

(The action test mocks fetchErrorHandler from uicore so it doesn't fire a Swal.)

@tomrndom Confirmed. queryTemplates is debounced, but two runs more than 500 ms apart are separate fetches, and whichever lands last wins, even if it's the older search. A response that arrives after the input was cleared also repopulates the list. Same idea as the sequenced() guard, scoped to the input instance:

const requestSeq = useRef(0);

const fetchOptions = (input) => {
  requestSeq.current += 1;
  const mySeq = requestSeq.current;
  setLoading(true);
  queryTemplates(input, (templates) => {
    // a newer search (or a clear) superseded this one
    if (mySeq !== requestSeq.current) return;
    // ...existing mapping, setOptions, setLoading(false)
  });
};

Regression test for email-template-input.test.js. It fails on the current code and passes with the fix:

it("ignores an older search response that lands after a newer one", async () => {
  const callbacks = {};
  queryTemplates.mockImplementation((input, callback) => {
    callbacks[input] = callback;
  });
  render(<EmailTemplateInput id="parent" value={null} onChange={() => {}} />);

  const input = screen.getByRole("combobox");
  await userEvent.type(input, "ab");

  act(() => callbacks.ab([{ id: 2, identifier: "abc_newer" }]));
  act(() => callbacks.a([{ id: 1, identifier: "a_older" }]));

  expect(await screen.findByRole("option", { name: "abc_newer" })).toBeInTheDocument();
  expect(screen.queryByRole("option", { name: "a_older" })).not.toBeInTheDocument();
});

@tomrndom Confirmed: with a template already selected, you can't search for a different one. selectedOption is rebuilt as a new object on every render, and MUI 6.5.0's useAutocomplete resets the input text whenever the value reference changes, even while the input is focused (useAutocomplete.js:180-190: valueChange = value !== previousProps.value → resetInputValue(null, value, 'reset')). Each keystroke triggers setLoading / setOptions → re-render → new object → the typed text snaps back to the selected label and filters the fetched options out.

I reproduced it in both modes: with welcome_email selected, clearing the input and typing news leaves the input at "welcome_email" and newsletter never shows. This affects every consumer that edits an existing value: the parent picker here, the three selection-plan email template pickers, and the email flow event form. The old AsyncSelect didn't have this.

Suggested fix: memoize the option on its inputs:

// keep the reference stable between renders: MUI Autocomplete resets the
// typed text whenever the value reference changes
const selectedOption = useMemo(() => {
  if (!value) return null;
  return plainValue
    ? { value, label: value }
    : { value: String(value.id ?? ""), label: value.identifier ?? "" };
}, [value, plainValue]);

Regression test for src/components/inputs/__tests__/email-template-input.test.js. It fails on the current code and passes with the fix:

it.each([
  { mode: "object", plainValue: false, value: { id: 42, identifier: "welcome_email" } },
  { mode: "plainValue", plainValue: true, value: "welcome_email" }
])(
  "keeps the typed search when a template is already selected ($mode)",
  async ({ plainValue, value }) => {
    queryTemplates.mockImplementation((input, callback) => {
      setTimeout(() => callback([{ id: 7, identifier: "newsletter" }]), 10);
    });
    render(
      <EmailTemplateInput
        id="parent"
        value={value}
        onChange={() => {}}
        plainValue={plainValue}
      />
    );

    const input = screen.getByRole("combobox");
    await userEvent.click(input);
    await userEvent.clear(input);
    await userEvent.type(input, "news");

    expect(await screen.findByRole("option", { name: "newsletter" })).toBeInTheDocument();
    expect(input).toHaveValue("news");
  }
);

@tomrndom Confirmed. CloseIcon is aria-hidden, so this button has no accessible name, and screen readers announce an unnamed button. The emails.close key already exists in en.json:

<IconButton aria-label={T.translate("emails.close")} onClick={onClose}>

Test for email-template-json-dialog.test.js:

it("gives the close button an accessible name", () => {
  render(<EmailTemplateJsonDialog jsonData={{}} onUpdate={jest.fn()} onClose={jest.fn()} />);
  expect(screen.getByRole("button", { name: "emails.close" })).toBeInTheDocument();
});
