PR Checklist

  • Functionality has been tested, no obvious bugs
  • Code style follows project conventions
  • Documentation/comments updated (if applicable)

Brief Description of Changes

Explorer's tooltips are topmost windows, so a file info tip could be drawn on top of the preview window. This dismisses (TTM_POP) any Explorer tooltip that overlaps a visible QuickLook window, including ones already showing when a preview opens. Tooltips elsewhere are untouched. It runs on its own thread so it reacts while the UI thread is busy.

Related Issue (if any)

None.

Additional Notes

  • Builds cleanly against current master (MSBuild, Release). No automated tests.
  • Includes KeyboardLog.cs (the QuickLook.Keyboard.log writer) because failures are logged there; identical to the copy in the other PRs of this series.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Explorer tooltips that overlap a visible QuickLook window are now dismissed, reducing visual clutter while previewing files.
    • Tooltip handling now accounts for cases where window or process information is unavailable, helping prevent unrelated tooltips from being dismissed.

Explorer's tooltips are topmost windows, so a file info tip could be
drawn on top of the preview window. Dismiss (TTM_POP) any Explorer

KeyboardLog.cs (the QuickLook.Keyboard.log writer) is included because
the suppressor logs its failures there; it is identical to the copy
added by the Raw Input keyboard change.

Walkthrough

The application now creates and disposes an Explorer tooltip suppressor. A new helper dismisses overlapping Explorer tooltips. Another helper queues timestamped messages and writes them to a rotating local log file.

Changes: Explorer Tooltip Suppression

Layer / File(s) Summary
Suppressor lifecycle
QuickLook/App.xaml.cs, QuickLook/Helpers/ExplorerTooltipSuppressor.cs
App creates the suppressor during RunListener and disposes it during OnExit. The suppressor runs a WinEvent hook on a dedicated STA thread.
Tooltip detection and dismissal
QuickLook/Helpers/ExplorerTooltipSuppressor.cs
The suppressor checks shown windows and visible-window rectangles. It posts TTM_POP to dismiss overlapping Explorer tooltips.

Keyboard Logging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Queued keyboard log writing
QuickLook/Helpers/KeyboardLog.cs
KeyboardLog queues timestamped, thread-tagged messages and writes batches to a local log. It rotates logs larger than 512 KiB and logs preview phases that take at least 100 ms.

Merge Risk: Low · up to aff2c

The change is mergeable with owner awareness: unusually sustained diagnostics could delay log writes, and an Explorer tooltip may be dismissed beside a non-preview QuickLook window.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to aff2c

The cross-process action is narrowly limited to dismissing overlapping tooltip windows. No privilege escalation or sensitive-data exposure was established. The main design concern is that failure of the optional tooltip monitor during initialization is not isolated from application startup.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The optional tooltip monitor is a synchronous startup dependency without a failure-contained initialization outcome. The application waits indefinitely for readiness, but worker setup can throw before signaling it and has no local exception handler. Such a setup failure can become an application-wide startup failure rather than merely disabling tooltip suppression.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated external effect is desktop-local tooltip dismissal, not general message execution or data extraction. The overlap predicate includes every visible non-tooltip window owned by QuickLook, not only the active preview.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A process able to create windows on the observed desktop can influence callback inputs, and the Explorer-name check can be imitated. However, the inspected path still requires tooltip class and overlap and sends only TTM_POP with zero parameters; no privilege gain or sensitive-data disclosure was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Desktop event input crosses into QuickLook's callback. Controls reject non-window events, require tooltip-class and process-name matches before cross-process dismissal, and treat failed rectangle or process lookups as no match. The process-name test does not authenticate the executable.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal construction publishes the synchronization context before signaling readiness and assigning the application-owned instance. Callback exceptions are caught, the callback delegate remains retained through the message loop, and sequential repeated disposal becomes a no-op after the context is cleared.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give monitor initialization an explicit success-or-failure outcome and bounded wait, contain worker setup exceptions, validate hook installation, and place unhooking in guaranteed cleanup so this optional feature can fail independently of application startup.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Report log-write failures through an independent diagnostic path.

If directory creation, rotation, or append fails, this catch block discards the batch and gives no indication that logging stopped working. Capture the exception and report its failure mode without calling KeyboardLog.Write again. Keep the keyboard hook nonblocking. File.AppendAllText can raise an I/O exception. (learn.microsoft.com) Based on learnings: C# catch blocks should report specific failure details rather than silently swallow errors.

Limit overlap checks to preview windows.

If another QuickLook window is visible without a preview, OverlapsPreview treats that window as a preview. An Explorer tooltip that overlaps it is then dismissed, although it cannot cover a preview. Use the actual preview window handles for this check and for the scan triggered at Line 98.

Cap each batch before draining more entries.

The worker drains Queue with while (Queue.TryTake(...)), which has no count or size limit. The Queue capacity of 1,000 limits stored entries only, not the StringBuilder batch. If producers add entries faster than the worker can drain them, the loop does not exit, File.AppendAllText is not reached, and batch can grow without bound. Limit each batch, then write it before taking more entries. Entries left in Queue are picked up by the next GetConsumingEnumerable iteration.
