Merge Risk:

Mixed Gemini, Sarvam and ElevenLabs TTS evaluations are largely sound, but some failure paths can still leave results or run status wrong. A Gemini timeout or a partial submission failure can mark finished or already-submitted work as failed, and a long queue backlog can fail sync rows before a worker reaches them. Resolve or explicitly accept these before merging.
Security architecture risk:
Moderate · up to f836b
-
Project-scoped access is preserved, but repeated execution and interruption can leave external work inconsistent with reported results. Compatibility between the new processing paths and existing recovery behavior remains partly unresolved.
Retained concerns
- Medium · reliability · inferred: The new synchronous workflow lacks atomic ownership of external work and terminal transitions. Overlapping deliveries can both read PENDING results, perform credentialed synthesis, and upload independently named objects. The persistence helper also selects PENDING rows before ordinary ORM mutation, allowing overlapping writers that selected the same row to replace terminal outcomes. Timeout shutdown does not wait for running futures, so uploads can continue after failure cleanup and leave audio without a recorded owner. These conditions weaken containment of billed operations and synthesized-data lifecycle. Finished-before-read filtering and run-finalizer locking address narrower cases, not these races.
- Medium · reliability · inferred: Sync-only runs enter processing without creating batch jobs, while the existing poll_tts_run branch treats absence of batch jobs as terminal failure. If such a run reaches that branch, ongoing credentialed work is reported failed even though chunks continue and can subsequently change its status again. This creates conflicting lifecycle ownership and can encourage duplicate evaluation attempts. A sync-aware exclusion in the outer polling selector was not established, so effective reachability remains unresolved rather than a verified production failure.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- observed — An authenticated project caller can now direct dataset text to the registered Sarvam or ElevenLabs synthesis service. The application uses that project's provider credentials and storage configuration; model selection does not supply arbitrary network destinations or credential identifiers.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- inferred — The API establishes project permission and tenant-scoped dataset ownership, and submission revalidates run ownership. The chunk consumer then trusts queued organization, project, and model identifiers: its result lookup checks run ID, result IDs, and PENDING status rather than independently binding every row to those identifiers. Queue-producer integrity is therefore part of the boundary; exposure to untrusted producers was not established.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — Provider retries are bounded, with SDK-level retries disabled. Recovery attempts to fail remaining pending rows and finalize the run, but running synthesis futures are not awaited during shutdown, and recovery persistence calls are not independently guarded. These controls bound individual attempts without establishing durable reconciliation of interrupted work.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Establish durable execution ownership before external synthesis, enforce terminal transitions atomically, and reconcile uploaded objects against result ownership. Make polling explicitly execution-mode-aware so failure and recovery states have one consistent owner.

Explanation
Issue
#1228requires Sarvam and ElevenLabs models in the TTS evaluation flow.SUPPORTED_TTS_MODELSincludesbulbul:v3,eleven_v3, andeleven_v4. The submission flow creates result rows and dispatches synchronous provider tasks. The synchronous task synthesizes audio, stores results, and records failures. Tests cover model selection, dispatch, synthesis, persistence, and failure handling.

-
Explanation
The changes remain within TTS evaluation scope for issue
#1228. Gemini routing, mixed-model selection, provider voice and locale handling, synchronous worker execution, stale-row cleanup, transaction handling, documentation, and tests support the added provider evaluations. No demonstrated unrelated change appears in the whole-pull-request evidence.

Make submission idempotent across task redelivery.
When Celery redelivers this task after worker loss, each attempt can create new rows for the same sample/model pairs. The task then reloads every pending row and submits batch work and sync chunks again. The sync task skips rows already completed, but it does not deduplicate the new pending rows. These duplicate rows can cause duplicate provider calls.
Make row creation and downstream submission idempotent. A guard that skips every run whose status is not pending is unsafe: the task sets the status to processing before it enqueues sync chunks, so redelivery after worker loss in that interval could leave pending results undispatched.

Deferring to a follow-up: duplicate rows on redelivery already happen on main (create_tts_results predates this PR) and aren't introduced here. Will track separately.

@Prajna1999 Understood. Deferring this existing issue to a follow-up is reasonable. The idempotency concern remains open; no fix is claimed here.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for idempotent result creation and submission on task redelivery?

Make the stale-row check safe while a sync task is queued or running. The cron starts the stale window at run.inserted_at, not when the sync task starts. A queued or long-running task can therefore pass the window, and the cron then fails its rows and finalizes the run. The worker then writes SUCCESS without checking the row status, so a finalized run contradicts its rows. A queued task that starts after the window finds no pending rows and does no work.

The overwrite race is fixed in 162c45d: stale marking now goes through fail_pending_tts_results, which only updates rows still PENDING, so it can't clobber a SUCCESS. Not changing the stale-window anchor: measuring from task start would need a new column, the window is the Celery hard limit + 10 min (35 min in production), and a queue backlog that long is a bigger incident already.

@Prajna1999 Thanks for clarifying the stale-window policy. I accept keeping run.inserted_at as the anchor.
I verified that fail_pending_tts_results protects an existing SUCCESS from stale marking. The reverse ordering remains possible:
- Cron marks a
PENDINGrowFAILEDand finalizes the run. - The active worker finishes synthesis.
- The worker calls
update_tts_result, which writesSUCCESSwithout a status guard.
That worker call remains in backend/app/services/tts_evaluations/sync_generation.py, Line 233. The remaining change is an atomic WHERE status = 'pending' guard on the worker write, with skipped writes logged. This does not require a new timestamp column.

Learning: In kaapi-backend's Python TTS evaluation flow, the maintainer accepts measuring synchronous-task staleness from EvaluationRun.inserted_at using CELERY_TASK_TIME_LIMIT + TTS_SYNC_STALE_GRACE_SECONDS (35 minutes in production). A queue backlog beyond that window is treated as an operational incident; do not require a task-start timestamp solely to change this policy.

185-188: The stale window still starts atrun.inserted_at, and the stale-row update is not conditional on row status. A previous review already reported this issue._fail_pending_resultsselects PENDING rows. It then callsupdate_tts_result, which updates byresult_idonly. A sync worker can writeSUCCESSbetween the select and the update. The cron then overwrites thatSUCCESSwithFAILED. The worker can also write after the run is finalized. That write leaves a terminal run whose rows contradict its status. The fix from the previous review still applies: base staleness on the time the sync task starts, and update a row only while its status is still PENDING.Based on learnings: "When a background or recovery process performs a SELECT followed by a separate UPDATE keyed only on a record's primary ID, check that the UPDATE also includes a WHERE condition on the state/owner fields observed at SELECT time."

Measure sync staleness from sync-task start.
poll_tts_run uses run.inserted_at with a 1,200-second threshold: the 600-second hard limit plus the 600-second grace period. The API creates the run before it queues run_tts_batch_submission. That task then queues run_tts_sync_generation on the same default queue. Queue backlog can therefore consume the stale window before sync generation starts.
The cron can mark all pending sync rows FAILED and finalize the run before the sync task processes them. The sync task then finds no pending rows.
Store an explicit sync-start timestamp for each model when execute_tts_sync_generation begins. Use that timestamp for stale detection, and do not use the latest result updated_at as a proxy because rows are updated independently during processing.

Not changing the stale-window anchor: measuring from sync-task start would need a new column. The window is the Celery hard limit + 10 min (35 min in production), and a queue backlog that long is a bigger incident already. The overwrite part of this is fixed in 162c45d (stale marking only updates rows still PENDING).
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@Prajna1999 Thanks for clarifying. The production stale window is 35 minutes, not the 20 minutes I cited.
I won’t press for a new sync-start timestamp. Keeping run.inserted_at accepts the risk that a long queue delay can expire rows before synthesis starts. Restricting stale updates to PENDING rows addresses a separate overwrite risk; it does not remove that queue-delay risk.

Learning: In ProjectTech4DevAI/kaapi-backend, TTS evaluation stale detection intentionally uses EvaluationRun.inserted_at. The production threshold is the Celery hard time limit plus 600 seconds, totaling 35 minutes. The maintainers accept premature expiry during prolonged queue backlog as an operational incident rather than adding a per-model sync-start timestamp.

The same "mark this model's pending rows as FAILED" logic now lives in 5 places:
crud/tts_evaluations/cron.py(this function)services/tts_evaluations/sync_generation.py→_fail_pending_resultsservices/tts_evaluations/batch_result_processing.py→_fail_pending_resultsservices/tts_evaluations/batch_job.py→ the inline loop underif failed_models:crud/tts_evaluations/batch.py→ the inline loop in theexceptblock (older code, not changed in this PR)
Each copy fetches all pending rows and then updates them one by one. update_tts_result runs its own SELECT for each row, so failing 200 rows costs about 400 queries. A
fix to one copy also won't reach the other four.
Can we replace all of them with a single function in crud/tts_evaluations/result.py that runs one UPDATE?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done in 162c45d. Added fail_pending_tts_results in crud/tts_evaluations/result.py — a single UPDATE … WHERE evaluation_run_id, provider, status = PENDING — and all 5 places now use it, including crud/tts_evaluations/batch.py. The PENDING filter also stops the cron's stale marking from overwriting a row a worker just set to SUCCESS.

Fail only Gemini models without a persisted batch job.
A later start_batch_job failure is handled for the current model inside start_tts_evaluation_batch. However, successful jobs are committed before update_tts_run runs. If that later operation raises, the caller marks every batch_models entry as failed, including models with a persisted provider_batch_id.
Limit the outer fallback to models without a persisted BatchJob.provider_batch_id, or return per-model outcomes from the helper when a later operation fails.

Save completed rows before the timeout handler fails the rest.
The loop changes the detached rows in memory only. The single session.add_all at Line 198-200 runs after the loop ends. If Timeout or SoftTimeLimitExceeded occurs during the loop, the task never writes any change from that loop. Audio for those rows is already uploaded. _fail_pending_results then marks every row of the model FAILED, including rows whose audio succeeded. A large Gemini batch that runs past the soft limit therefore loses all its results. Nothing re-drives processing, and the run cannot recover.
Save the results in chunks during the loop, for example every N rows. Another option is to save the processed rows in the timeout handler before you call _fail_pending_results.

Persist processed TTS results before timeout handling marks remaining rows
failed. Update execute_tts_result_processing to initialize result_map before the
try block, save completed rows periodically during the loop in bounded chunks,
and retain a timeout-path flush for any unsaved non-PENDING rows before calling
_fail_pending_results.

- Add fail_pending_tts_results: one UPDATE limited to a run, provider and PENDING status, replacing five copies of select-then-update-per-row. The PENDING filter also stops the cron overwriting a row a worker just marked SUCCESS. - Fail Gemini rows missing from the batch output instead of leaving them PENDING, which made the cron re-dispatch result processing forever. - Run the stale missing-batch-job check per Gemini model, not per run. There are no migrations or schema changes, and the code reverts cleanly. One catch: runs containing Sarvam/ElevenLabs models that are still in flight at rollback would be failed by the old cron with "No batch jobs found".
Blast Radius: moderate
failedinstead ofcompleted. Final status lags by up to one cron interval because only the cron finalizes.start_batch_jobnow commits beforeprovider.create_batch. This affects every caller, including text and STT evaluations, not just TTS.eleven_v3andeleven_v4share one API key, so running both at once can hit its concurrent-request limit. This is why concurrency is capped at 2 per task.run_metadatagains a newvoiceskey. The existingvoice_nameis unchanged.Checklist

Closes #1228
Summary
This PR adds Sarvam
bulbul:v3and Elevenlabseleven_v3andeleven_v4models to the TTS evaluation flow. The user can select multiple models includinggemini-2.5-pro-peview-ttsandgemini-3.1-flash-tts-previewto run tts evaulations.Since sarvam and elevenlabs do not support batch job processing, they are evaluated synchronously in their own celery task. The parent celery tasks enqueues as many celery tasks as their are synchronous jobs. Used threadpool with 2 worker each to process text rows in CSV for sync tasks.
Stale check: Sarvam/ElevenLabs rows are only ever written by their own Celery task, so if that task is lost without cleaning up (hard time-limit kill, purged queue, crash loop), the TTS cron marks the model's leftover PENDING rows FAILED once the run is older than
CELERY_TASK_TIME_LIMIT+TTS_SYNC_STALE_GRACE_SECONDSi.e (2100 seconds), so the run can't stayprocessingforever.Checklist
