Core hardening: real 7z support + security fixes (Task 6) - #184
Adds real 7z support and the remaining hardening items from the task list.
Checklist
Part A — 7z compression and extraction (SevenZip wrapper, Compressor wiring, CLI, tests, CI)
Part B — plugin executor argv fix + real-path executable containment
Part C — CUE parser with apostrophes
Part D — ROM renamer filename safety
Part E — README accuracy
Part F — Release workflow and fetch script hygiene
How to test locally
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install -y p7zip-full # provides 7zcd core
dart pub get
OPENROM_REQUIRE_7Z=1 dart test
ZIP needs nothing installed; 7z compression/extraction needs an installed 7z/7zz or OPENROM_7Z pointing at one. CI installs p7zip-full and sets OPENROM_REQUIRE_7Z=1 on the core test step.
This PR was created by an AI agent (OpenHands) on behalf of the user.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added 7Z compression and extraction alongside ZIP support. 7-Zip must be installed for 7Z operations.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of CUE files with quoted filenames, varied line endings, or a UTF-8 marker.
ROM renaming now sanitizes suggested filenames and prevents renames from escaping the selected folder.
Compression and extraction failures now display clearer error messages.
Documentation
Clarified ZIP and 7Z support, installation options, and behavior when 7-Zip is unavailable.
Add SevenZip wrapper (core/lib/src/seven_zip.dart) that shells out to an
installed 7z/7zz via Process.runSync with an argv list, always passing -- before
user paths. Wire it into Compressor for both compress and extract, replacing the
two UnsupportedError throws, and add the CLI error/exit-code path.
- atomic replace of an existing .7z (temp .part-<pid> + rename)
- pre-extraction safety listing, symlink/escape guard, staging dir
- encrypted archives fail fast; no 7-Zip -> clear failure message
- OPENROM_7Z / PATH / Windows Program Files lookup, no shell
- tests: stub argv+safety group, parseSevenZipListing units, real 7-Zip round
trips (files, dirs, corrupted, encrypted, replace-not-append)
- CI: install p7zip-full and set OPENROM_REQUIRE_7Z=1 on Test core

Walkthrough
This change adds 7-Zip compression and extraction, updates CUE parsing and plugin execution checks, sanitizes ROM filenames and rename destinations, and adjusts release and binary-fetch workflows.
Changes: 7-Zip Archive Support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Wire 7-Zip into compression and CLI core/lib/src/compressor.dart, core/lib/openrom_core.dart, core/bin/openrom.dart, README.md, .github/workflows/quality.yml, core/test/compressor_test.dart
The compressor routes 7z operations to the new wrapper. The CLI help lists ZIP and 7Z, assigns the CLI result to the process exit code, and prints job errors in non-JSON mode. The README describes 7-Zip requirements, and CI installs 7-Zip for core tests.
Parse listings and compress archives core/lib/src/seven_zip.dart, core/test/compressor_7z_test.dart
The wrapper parses archive listings, discovers a 7-Zip executable, maps compression levels, and creates replacement archives through temporary files. Tests cover listing parsing and compression behavior.
Validate and extract archives core/lib/src/seven_zip.dart, core/test/compressor_7z_test.dart
Extraction rejects encrypted or unsafe archive contents, stages files before transfer, and checks paths and links. Tests cover extraction failures and real executable round trips.
CUE Parsing and BIN Merging
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse CUE declarations and verify merged output core/lib/src/bin_merger.dart, core/test/bin_merger_test.dart
The parser handles quoted and unquoted names, supported file-type tokens, BOMs, and varied line endings. Tests check parsing errors and merged BIN and CUE output.
Manifest validation requires the executable token at index zero. The executor omits that token from process arguments; tests check schema-v2 and legacy plugin argument handling.
The executor resolves paths through symbolic links and rejects executables outside the resolved plugin directory. A test covers an outside symlink target.
ROM Filename and Destination Safety
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Sanitize names and guard rename destinations core/lib/src/rom_renamer.dart, core/test/rom_renamer_test.dart
Suggested ROM filenames are sanitized and limited to 200 UTF-8 bytes. Rename operations check the canonical destination parent and record failures. Tests cover filename rules and traversal-like names.
Release and Binary Fetch Workflows
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate release inputs and build package names .github/workflows/Release.yml
Release jobs validate versions and use environment values for versioned artifacts. The workflow accepts a binary ref, and macOS passes its matrix architecture through an environment value.
Validate binary refs and architecture matches scripts/fetch-binaries.sh, scripts/test-fetch-binaries.sh
The fetch script validates the checksums ref and rejects ambiguous architecture matches when no architecture is set. The test harness checks downloads, checksums, refs, and architecture selection.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b937f
7z compression with a relative output directory can fail and leave a partial archive behind. Extraction can reject valid archives when the output path crosses a symlink. With an older 7-Zip build, a crafted archive could write outside the staging directory before the post-extraction check runs. A CUE file with an unsupported FILE type can merge to a wrong BIN without any error. These should be fixed before merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to b937f
The new 7z extraction path does not fully enforce its intended filesystem boundary throughout extraction and output promotion. Certain backend or destination-link conditions could allow writes outside the selected folder. Failed output replacement can also lose previous files. These are meaningful risks, but the demonstrated entrypoint requires archive processing by the invoking account; broader privilege or cross-service exposure was not established.
Retained concerns
High · security · inferred: The new 7z path does not preserve containment across the complete write lifecycle. Archive links are rejected only after native extraction, and listing validation is not bound to an immutable archive. Separately, promotion joins validated relative paths onto outputDir without checking resolved destination parents; an existing directory link can redirect writes outside the selected folder. The native-extraction escape depends on backend behavior or archive mutation, whereas destination-link redirection requires a suitable existing filesystem layout.
Medium · reliability · inferred: New 7z output commits are not rollback-safe. Compression deletes an existing final archive before renaming its replacement, contradicting the stated preservation-on-failure contract. Extraction replaces destinations individually; a later failure leaves earlier replacements committed while staging cleanup removes remaining prepared files. A failed job therefore does not imply preservation of previous output.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The verified entrypoint processes a user-selected filesystem archive. Archive-controlled entries reach a native process and output-file replacement under the invoking account's authority. A containment failure can therefore affect writable files outside the ROM output tree; higher-privilege integrations and archive delivery provenance remain unresolved.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained traversal finding maps to the newly enabled extraction boundary. A link-following backend could write outside staging before the guard rejects the link. The inspected tests establish unsafe-name rejection and post-extraction link detection, not prevention of such external writes by every supported backend.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Plugin execution adds a resolved-path containment check before the existing optional binary hash verification and shell-free launch. This strengthens executable selection; it does not create a sandbox, and the process still inherits the parent environment.
observed — DAT-derived ROM names now pass through single-component sanitization and a canonical-parent guard. CRC/size matching remains separate from the filename label. Existing-target checks prevent sequential collisions from overwriting a different file.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind validation and extraction to an immutable archive snapshot, reject unsupported link metadata before extraction, and enforce the write boundary independently of backend behavior. Promotion should traverse destination parents without following links outside the intended root.
proposed — Use exclusively owned per-operation temporary artifacts and a replacement strategy that preserves previous committed output until finalization succeeds. Define recovery behavior for interrupted or partially completed extraction promotion.

Autofix · Keep fixing CodeRabbit findings and required CI, and resolving merge conflicts
The manifest arg vector normally starts with {kind:executable}, which names the
program itself. The executor was passing that token to Process.start, so every
tool received its own path as its first argument. Drop it from the argv (Dart's
arguments already exclude argv[0]) and reject an executable token anywhere but
first in the manifest validator.
Containment now also resolves real paths (resolveSymbolicLinksSync on the plugin
dir and the executable), so a symlink inside the plugin directory pointing
outside is refused. The doc comment matches the code again.
Tests: argv[0] no longer leaks for v2 and legacy v1 plugins, an out-of-position
executable token is a validation error, and a symlinked executable is refused.

The FILE regex used [^"']+ and anchored on BINARY, so any name containing an
apostrophe (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (USA) (Track 1).bin) failed to parse.
Replace it with a non-greedy, end-anchored match of the whole FILE line, then
strip one pair of matching surrounding quotes. Non-BINARY file types now raise a
clear FormatException. Reading is done with a BOM strip and an explicit CRLF/CR
split instead of readAsLinesSync.
Tests: apostrophes, parentheses, unicode, lowercase file, CRLF, BOM, single
quoted and unquoted names, a name with both quote styles, and a full merge round
trip (bytes are the exact concatenation, cue offsets correct).

suggestedFilename returned the raw DAT rom_name and it was passed straight to
p.join(folder, ...), so a malicious DAT could write outside the folder.
Add a pure top-level safeRomFilename(name, {required fallback}): replace
/ \ : * ? " < > | and control chars with _, drop trailing dots and spaces,
prefix Windows reserved device names, cap at 200 UTF-8 bytes preserving the
extension, and fall back when nothing usable remains. Ordinary names are
unchanged. Use it in suggestedFilename and add a final guard that the canonical
dirname of the new path equals the canonical folder.
Tests: ordinary names unchanged, traversal/reserved/control/length/empty cases,
and a malicious DAT name that stays inside the folder.

7Z compression and extraction are supported through an installed 7-Zip
(7zz/7z, or OPENROM_7Z) and are not bundled; ZIP needs nothing. Split the single
'ZIP / 7Z' roadmap line accordingly and add a short 7-Zip requirement note to the
compression section with per-OS install hints and the OPENROM_7Z lookup order.
No other README claims were changed.

Release.yml: validate the workflow_dispatch version against
^[0-9]+\.[0-9]+\.[0-9]+([.-][A-Za-z0-9.]+)?$ in a first step and expose it as
job-level env RELEASE_VERSION (plus OPENROM_BINS_REF and MATRIX_ARCH), then use
the shell/PowerShell variables inside every run: block. No ${{ }} remains inside
any run: block. Adds a bins_ref workflow_dispatch input (default main).
fetch-binaries.sh: OPENROM_BINS_REF (default main, validated) builds the default
checksums URL; OPENROM_BINS_CHECKSUMS_URL still wins. Without --arch, refuse to
fetch more than one distinct arch into a flat dest instead of silently
overwriting same-named files (android stays single-arch).
Adds scripts/test-fetch-binaries.sh exercising a local HTTP fixture: success,
checksum mismatch (exit 4), ambiguous arch (exit 1), android single arch, ref
honoured, invalid ref. actionlint and shellcheck are clean for the touched
files.

The malicious-name test used Directory.systemTemp directly, so a stray
../escaped.bin next to it (e.g. left by another run) could make the
canonical-dirname assertion flake. Run inside a nested per-test folder so
'..' resolves under the unique base dir.

7z is not bundled — a later task via OpenROM-bins; locate() has a hook for assets/<os>/<arch>/7zz but nothing is shipped yet.
Process.runSync gives no incremental progress for 7z; the compressor reports
only 0 → 100 (documented in a comment in compressor.dart).
.github/workflows/Release.yml ARM64 "Set up Flutter (manual install)" step:
pre-existing SC2086 from unquoted $HOME/flutter / $GITHUB_PATH
(actionlint line 358). Not part of this task's scope.
.github/workflows/Release.yml still interpolates ${{ matrix.arch }} and ${{ github.event.inputs.version }} in name:/path:/with: — that is
intended (${{ }} is allowed outside run:).
Decisions needed
None blocking. Open question: whether to bundle 7zz via OpenROM-bins (later
task) so 7z works without a system install.

Allow hyphens in prerelease identifiers.
3.5.0-rc-1 is a valid Dart version, but this check rejects it. All four build jobs then stop before packaging. Allow hyphens within prerelease identifiers in each validator. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reject every unsupported FILE type.
If a CUE declares FILE "first.bin" BINARY, then FILE "second.flac" FLAC, this regex ignores the second declaration. The next track retains first.bin, so mergeBins can copy the first file twice and report success. Match any file-type token, then reject every value other than BINARY. Add a test with an unsupported type after a valid track. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Validate the filename again after truncation.
If name is 'a' * 199 + ' ' + 'b' * 25, _truncateUtf8 returns a 200-byte name that ends in a space. The earlier trim() cannot remove that new trailing space. Windows filename guidance prohibits trailing spaces, so the rename can fail or produce a name different from suggestedFilename. Trim trailing spaces and dots after truncation, then apply the fallback if the result is empty. (learn.microsoft.com)

Resolve outputDir to an absolute path before passing tmpPath to 7-Zip.
tmpPath is built from outputDir. The Dart process then checks it with File(tmpPath).existsSync() and renames it. However, Process.runSync runs 7-Zip with workingDirectory: parent. If outputDir is relative, 7-Zip and Dart resolve the same string against different directories.
7-Zip writes to /data/roms/out/game.iso.7z.part-N.
Dart looks for ./out/game.iso.7z.part-N.
Compression reports "7-Zip reported success but produced no archive."
The partial archive stays in the source directory.
The CLI passes --output through unchanged, so this path is reachable.
p.canonicalize on Windows also lowercases baseName. The output archive name is then lowercase, for example game.iso.7z instead of Game.iso.7z. Use p.normalize(p.absolute(...)) instead.
Proposed fix
- final absSource = p.canonicalize(source);+ final absSource = p.normalize(p.absolute(source));
final baseName = p.basename(absSource);
final parent = p.dirname(absSource);
- final finalPath = p.join(outputDir, '$baseName.7z');+ final absOutDir = p.normalize(p.absolute(outputDir));+ final finalPath = p.join(absOutDir, '$baseName.7z');
// 7z appends to an existing archive, so always build a fresh temp file.
- final tmpPath = p.join(outputDir, '$baseName.7z.part-$pid');+ final tmpPath = p.join(absOutDir, '$baseName.7z.part-$pid');

Resolve the staging root before containment checks.
p.canonicalize canonicalizes the lexical path, including ASCII case on Windows, but does not resolve symlinks. _stagingGuardError resolves extracted entities before comparing them with stagingRoot. A symlink in outputDir can therefore cause valid files to fail the containment check.
stagingRoot is already passed to _moveStaged; no additional change is required there.

Skip the whole stub group on Windows.
Only two tests in group('7z stub (argv + safety)') use skip: !isPosix. All other tests in the group call _writeSevenZipStub. That helper writes a /bin/sh script and runs chmod. On Windows these tests fail, so dart test fails for Windows contributors. The project ships Windows builds.
Apply the skip to the group instead. Then the per-test skips are not needed.
