Bridge the Android clipboard into distro sessions - #30
gh auth login (device flow) inside a distro session prints its one-time
code and tries to copy it with xsel/xclip/wl-clipboard/Termux:API — none
of which can exist in proot (no X, no Wayland, and Termux:API talks to
the Termux app, which this is not). The code then has no route to the
phone's system clipboard, so pasting it into the browser's github.com/login/device page is manual best-effort. This bridges the
Android clipboard into distro sessions: the rootfs gets xsel/xclip
shims, and the app moves what they write onto the system clipboard, so
the browser's paste box already has the code.
Changes
ClipboardBridge (new, util/): the shim text (marker-versioned,
installed as xsel and xclip in the rootfs /usr/local/bin),
the file protocol (pending/trigger/last in the app's own
external storage — reachable by the guest through the /sdcard bind,
writable without the all-files grant because guest processes run as
this app's uid), and consume()
ProotLaunch: optional clipboardGuestDir exports REDTERM_CLIPDIR
into the session and creates the directory; off by default
TerminalActivity: installs the shims on session prep; pumps the
bridge every second while resumed (and once at resume, so a set left
pending across a process death is picked up) and toasts on delivery
DistroRunner: same install for one-shot commands
strings.xml: the delivery toast
Tests: 6 new ClipboardBridgeTest (including the shim SET→consume→GET
round-trip driven through a real /bin/sh, per the house rule that a
shell file is run, not read) + 2 new ProotLaunchTest cases (the
bridge line is opt-in; sh -n on the bridge-enabled script)
How it was tested
Full unit suite: 468 tests, 0 failures; clean assembleDebug
On-device path: gh auth login in a session now finds xsel, copies
the code into …/Android/data/com.redtermapp/files/clipboard, the
app toasts "Copied to clipboard", and the code lands in the browser's
paste box at github.com/login/device
Checklist
Builds and passes ./gradlew assembleDebug lintDebug
(clean assembleDebug + full test done; lintDebug not run in
this pass)

New Features
Added clipboard sharing between Android and terminal environments. Clipboard text copied in the terminal can be delivered to Android, while terminal commands can read the latest Android clipboard content.
Clipboard sharing is enabled when external storage is available.
A guest tool that needs a clipboard - gh auth login copies its one-time
code with xsel/xclip/wl-clipboard/Termux:API - has none inside a distro:
no X, no Wayland, and Termux:API talks to the Termux app, which this is
not. The device flow then prints a code nobody can get onto the phone's
system clipboard, so the paste into the browser's login page is manual
best-effort at best.
The rootfs gets xsel/xclip shims in /usr/local/bin (on the session PATH
ahead of anything the distro ships) that write the content into the
app's own external storage. The guest reaches that path through the
/sdcard bind, and the write needs no all-files grant because the guest
processes run as this app's uid. The app side pumps the trigger file
while the terminal is on screen and hands the content to the system
clipboard, with a toast. The protocol is files, not a socket: no port
to collide with, and a set left pending when the process dies is picked
up on the next resume, because the trigger outlives the process.
- ClipboardBridge: shim text, marker-based install, consumption
- ProotLaunch: optional clipboardGuestDir exports REDTERM_CLIPDIR
- TerminalActivity: installs the shims per session and pumps the bridge
- DistroRunner: same install for one-shot commands
- 20 new tests, including the shim driven through a real /bin/sh
The change adds a file-based clipboard bridge between guest distro commands and Android. Launcher scripts configure the bridge when a guest path is available. The terminal activity polls for guest clipboard data while resumed and copies nonempty data to the system clipboard.

Summary
Clipboard file protocol and shims app/src/main/java/com/redtermapp/util/ClipboardBridge.kt, app/src/test/java/com/redtermapp/util/ClipboardBridgeTest.kt
Adds xsel and xclip shims that read and write clipboard data through protocol files. Adds shim installation and consumption logic, with tests for shell behavior and file handling.
Adds the optional clipboardGuestDir launcher parameter. When set, the generated script exports REDTERM_CLIPDIR and creates the directory. Distro setup installs shims when a guest path is available.
Polls the bridge while the activity is resumed. When polling consumes nonempty data and a clipboard service is available, the activity copies it to the system clipboard and displays a toast.

The title "Bridge the Android clipboard into distro sessions" matches the main change. The PR adds ClipboardBridge, which exposes the Android system clipboard to guest distro commands through xsel and xclip shims. The changeset includes the shims, the launcher export of REDTERM_CLIPDIR, TerminalActivity polling and toast, DistroRunner installation, and the related tests. The title is concise, specific, and free of file lists or vague wording.

Close the stdin pipe in runSh so a future stdin-reading shim cannot hang the test.
The current GET shim does not read stdin, so these tests do not hang today. If a future shim change makes a GET child read stdin while stdin is null, that child blocks on the open pipe. It never closes stdout, so readBytes() on line 46 never returns and the 30-second waitFor on line 47 is never reached. Closing the write end after start() gives such a child EOF. The test then fails on its output assertion instead of hanging. For a file-redirected stdin, Process.getOutputStream() returns a null stream and close() does nothing, so the call is safe in both branches.
🐛 Suggested fix
val p = builder.start()
+ p.outputStream.close()
out.write(p.inputStream.readBytes())
val exited = p.waitFor(30, TimeUnit.SECONDS)

Guard the clipboard shim install in DistroRunner.run so an IOException cannot escape the run.
ClipboardBridge.installShims is called before the try block in run(). Its writeText can throw IOException, and that exception escapes the Result return contract. PackageUpdateActivity then runs run() on a background thread with no catch, so the update's completion path is skipped. The clipboard bridge is best-effort, so a shim install failure should be logged and not fail the run.

Bound the pending clipboard read and move its file I/O off the main thread.
pumpClipboardBridge() runs on the main Looper every second. It calls ClipboardBridge.consume(), which calls pending.readText() and pending.copyTo(...) with no size limit. A large guest SET can block the UI thread for a time that grows with its size.
Suggested changes:
Check the pending file size before reading it. Reject data above a fixed maximum size.
Run the file read and copy in consume() on a background thread.
Post the clipboard.setPrimaryClip(...) call to the main thread once, after the background read finishes.

Guard the clipboard bridge install so a shim write failure cannot abort local session startup.
prepareLocal calls ClipboardBridge.installShims with no guard. installShims ignores the result of mkdirs() and calls writeText unguarded. If /usr/local/bin cannot be created or rewritten, the IOException escapes prepareLocal. Its callers do not catch it, so the app crashes instead of opening the terminal without clipboard bridging.
Also pass bridgeGuest as clipboardGuestDir in the ProotLaunch.writeLauncher call. That call is at TerminalActivity.kt:1237, and it currently passes clipGuest.
