fbuild host tools are moving to cosmocc Actually Portable Executables: one binary per tool for Windows, macOS and Linux on x86_64 and aarch64. Unix kernels can't exec an APE without a binfmt handler (NixOS ships none), so every spawn failed with "Exec format error". - platform::ape detects the APE magic and launches `<loader> <image> args`. fbuild provides the loader from the image itself: the Linux ELF loader, the macOS x86_64 Mach-O loader, or ape-m1.c compiled once with cc on Apple Silicon. Loaders are validated and installed content-addressed into an owner-only, exec-capable cache, with a sealed memfd as the last resort on Linux (raw syscall, so the glibc 2.17 floor holds). - The loader is also exposed as `ape` first on the child's PATH, so APE programs a tool spawns itself (gcc -> cc1/as) resolve too. - A process-wide fork lock keeps freshly written loaders from failing with ETXTBSY under parallel spawns. - zccache spawns compilers itself, so FbuildZccacheService hands it a `#!/bin/sh` shim that keeps the compiler's name and execs the loader on the original image. - Tool lookup accepts tool, tool.exe and tool.com on every host (non-native spellings only when they are APE). Zip extraction restores the APE exec bit. Registry files without `system`, and tools.json "any", count as universal. - Direct Command::new tool spawns move to process::command/tokio_command. Tests: the hello-world cosmocc fixture via run_command and process::command, hostile envs, tampered caches, symlinked and world-writable cache dirs, 48-way concurrent first spawns, and an opt-in all-APE cosmocc gcc toolchain through run_command and embedded zccache (cold miss then warm hit). Validated on Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Alpine, Arch (x64, root and user), aarch64 under qemu-user, and Windows tool-resolution logic under wine. Refs #1629

APE host-tool support is broadly in place, but the CI lint job currently fails on the new Teensy tests. Some cached installs from older versions may also keep non-executable APE tools. Fix the lint failures and route cache hits through the permission repair before merging.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to 56133
-
Executable-cache protections limit the apparent risk, and no new vulnerability was verified. However, confinement of package-repair writes and the authority boundary for caller-selected deployment tools remain unresolved.
Retained concerns
- Low · security · inferred: Permission repair newly mutates fresh and reused package trees. Ordinary symlink entries are skipped, but the marker write follows filesystem links and regular-file classification does not exclude hardlinks. Confinement of these new mutations depends on archive-link behavior and cache ownership that remain unproven; this is a conditional boundary concern, not a verified path-traversal finding.
Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The relevant outcomes are tool execution by the spawning process and filesystem mutation under its authority. An escaping package-repair write would be bounded by that process's filesystem permissions. No cross-tenant, cross-service, or privilege-elevation scope was established; the daemon's actual runtime identity remains unknown.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- observed — The supplied security assessment has no retained findings and one deferred candidate concerning the unchecked permission-marker write. Ordinary entry symlinks are excluded from scanning, but archive-created link reachability is unresolved. The inspected base already performed an unchecked empty completion-sentinel write, so the new marker alone does not establish a newly introduced arbitrary-truncation capability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — Teensy discovery now searches caller PATH before daemon PATH and PlatformIO. The inspected base already allowed caller PATH during bare-name fallback, but preferred daemon-discovered tools when available. The change therefore broadens caller-selected tool precedence without an observed credential transition. Endpoint authorization and whether callers share the daemon's trust and OS identity remain unresolved.
Hardening Proposals
- proposed — Consider making repair-marker publication explicitly link-safe and defining ownership requirements for restored package trees. Exercise archive-created links and interrupted repair against the pinned extractor versions. If deployment callers can differ in trust or identity from the daemon, explicitly authorize caller-selected executable paths rather than relying on lookup precedence.

…inventory, keep exact-name DLL lookup on PATH - process::command/tokio_command carry allow-direct-spawn markers (they are the sanctioned constructors). - Move the new registry-system and APE staged-install tests into their own files to stay under the 1000-LOC limit. - Regenerate ci/platform_boundary_research.tsv. - esp_qemu: find_on_path is also used for libiconv-2.dll; the tool-name expansion (.exe/.com/APE-only extensionless) never matches a DLL, which broke hydrate_windows_runtime on Windows. Keep an exact-name lookup and use find_tool_on_path only for the qemu binary.
…/raw prefix compares Dylint (ban_std_pathbuf, ban_file_based_locks, ban_unrooted_tempdir, ban_raw_path_prefix_compare) rejected the new APE and tool-lookup code. - platform::ape and executable tool helpers carry NormalizedPath; callers in PathBuf-allowlisted files convert with into_path_buf(). - Loader installs use create+truncate on a pid/sequence-unique temp name in an owner-only dir instead of create_new. - Drop the $TMPDIR cache candidate. Binaries register fbuild's cache root via ape::set_default_cache_root(get_cache_root()/ape) (daemon + CLI startup); XDG/~/.cache, the runtime dir and the Linux memfd remain fallbacks. - memfd detection is an exact-identity is_anonymous() check, not a /proc/self prefix compare.
…, ETXTBSY retry, docs - native shim embeds the APE image's len/mtime so an in-place compiler upgrade changes the shim zccache fingerprints. - process::shared_fork_guard is public; the allowlisted direct spawns (riscv probe, gdb, clang tools) fork under it. - run_command* retry ETXTBSY for APE launches (third-party spawners such as zccache fork without fbuild's lock). - README/platform docs describe the macOS loaders and current cache dirs.
…ly foreign addr2line; merge main - teensy_loader_cli lookup searches the requesting CLI's PATH first (deploy_teensy.rs). - Installs extracted before APE support get their APE exec bits repaired once (ape_perms.rs, .fbuild-ape-perms-v1 marker); fresh installs write the marker. - derive_addr2line_path accepts a non-native sibling only when it is an APE. - Refresh boundary inventory after merging main.

Resolve three conflicts introduced by main's refactors: - crates/fbuild-library/src/library/esptool.rs: main split the test module into esptool_tests.rs (1000-LOC gate) and reworked source_esptool_path_for_host to the uv Windows console launcher (esptool.exe). Keep main's `#[path = "esptool_tests.rs"] mod tests;` and port this branch's APE-only test (find_binary_accepts_a_nested_ape_com) into esptool_tests.rs. - crates/fbuild-packages-fetch/src/extractor.rs: keep main's validate_extraction(dest_dir) and re-add this branch's mark_ape_executables(dest_dir) for the zip path (both are needed: validation then APE exec-bit restore). - ci/platform_boundary_research.tsv: regenerate the derived inventory via `uv run --no-project python ci/platform_boundary_research.py --write`. Validated: workspace `soldr cargo check --all-targets`, `soldr cargo fmt --check`, clippy (-D warnings) on the touched crates, and `./test` (3889 passed, 0 failed; fbuild-paths long-path tests require a short TMPDIR — pass with TMPDIR=/tmp).
Agents that read AGENTS.md now get the same instructions as Claude. A relative symlink (not a copy) so the two can never drift.
…C probe `get_gcc_multilib_dir` held the shared fork lock across the whole `probe.output()`, so a stalled GCC probe blocked loader installation from acquiring the exclusive guard. Fork under the shared lock (released before the wait) with the stdio `output()` would set, matching the pattern already used by the clang_tools and debug direct spawns. Addresses the CodeRabbit review thread on #1633 (crates/fbuild-toolchain/src/toolchain/riscv.rs:187).
`foreign_root_owner_message_names_the_owner` asserted the message contains the unix literal `/venv/bin/fbuild-daemon`, but `foreign_root_owner_message` renders `claim.exe.display()`, which `NormalizedPath` makes host-native — on Windows that is `\venv\bin\fbuild-daemon`, so the assertion failed and the `full / windows / Check (windows-latest)` job went red. Assert against `claim.exe.display()` itself so the test holds on every host. This is a latent main-side (#1739) test that only the full Windows lane runs. Validated on Linux: `soldr cargo test -p fbuild-cli --bin fbuild daemon_client::tests` → 16 passed; `soldr cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings` clean.
