Introduce the pkg/util package providing reusable OrmQueryFunc scopes for common query operations:

  • Pagination & Limits: Paginate, WithLimit / Limit, WithOffset
  • Relations & Joins: WithPreload, WithJoins
  • Ordering: OrderByAsc, OrderByDesc, WithOrder
  • Projections & Filters: WithSelect, WithOmit, WithDistinct, WithWhere, WithOr
  • Grouping & Aggregations: WithGroup, WithHaving
  • Advanced: WithUnscoped, WithTable, and Combine (multi-scope composition)

Include a Ginkgo test suite covering all helpers and update documentation in docs/content/docs/7-advanced-querying.md and rays_orm.go.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added reusable query helpers for pagination, filtering, sorting, field selection, relation loading, joins, grouping, soft deletes, table selection, and other common operations.
    • Added support for combining multiple query operations. Pagination defaults invalid page values and page sizes, and reports errors when offsets overflow.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the advanced querying guide with helper references and examples for pagination, query composition, relation loading, and aggregation, including calculating average values by group.

Walkthrough

The util package adds reusable GORM query functions for pagination, query modifiers, query clauses, and composition. Tests cover their behavior. The advanced querying guide and package documentation describe the helpers.

Changes: Query helpers

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pagination and query modifiers
pkg/util/query_func.go, pkg/util/query_func_test.go, docs/content/docs/7-advanced-querying.md, rays_orm.go

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: Low · up to ad9a3

Callers should allow-list untrusted ordering expressions. The change is otherwise mergeable with that awareness.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to ad9a3

The helpers reuse an existing query interface, and the reviewed paths show no newly introduced authorization bypass. Some options accept powerful query expressions or change record visibility. Their effective exposure depends on downstream callers, which are not available for assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Effective data exposure follows the database connection's existing privileges and the scopes chosen by its caller. Alternate-table selection and unscoped queries can broaden returned data within that authority, but the reviewed paths do not establish a new attacker-accessible route or additional database privilege.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Several helpers forward query expressions and arguments directly to GORM without validating expression structure. Parameter placeholders are demonstrated for filter values, but these wrappers are not sanitization or tenant-enforcement boundaries. Arbitrary scope authority already existed through OrmQueryFunc before this PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document explicitly that SQL structure and table choices require trusted or allowlisted inputs, filter values should use placeholders, and permission checks for unscoped or alternate-table access remain the application's responsibility.

Use clause.OrderByColumn if these helpers must enforce column-only input.

GORM v1.31.2 treats string Order values as raw SQL. An untrusted value passed to these helpers can therefore alter the ORDER BY clause. The repository currently shows only fixed column values, and the guide documents arbitrary expressions through WithOrder; no request-to-helper path is established. Request values still require caller-side allow-listing.

clause.OrderByColumn quotes simple documented columns such as age and created_at, but it does not preserve arbitrary expressions.

Review comment at @pkg/util/query_func.go at line 82:
Update OrderByAsc and OrderByDesc to use GORM’s clause.OrderByColumn with the
input as a clause.Column name and the appropriate direction, rather than
concatenating it into a raw SQL string. Preserve the helpers’ existing ordering
behavior for simple column names.

Introduce the `pkg/util` package providing reusable `OrmQueryFunc` scopes
for common query operations:
- Pagination & Limits: `Paginate`, `WithLimit` / `Limit`, `WithOffset`
- Relations & Joins: `WithPreload`, `WithJoins`
- Ordering: `OrderByAsc`, `OrderByDesc`, `WithOrder`
- Projections & Filters: `WithSelect`, `WithOmit`, `WithDistinct`, `WithWhere`, `WithOr`
- Grouping & Aggregations: `WithGroup`, `WithHaving`
- Advanced: `WithUnscoped`, `WithTable`, and `Combine` (multi-scope composition)

Include a Ginkgo test suite covering all helpers and update documentation
in `docs/content/docs/7-advanced-querying.md` and `rays_orm.go`.

Review comments at @pkg/util/query_func.go:
- Around line 21-25: Update Paginate to normalize page and pageSize before
returning its scope function, so concurrent queries only read the normalized
captured values and do not race on writes.
- Line 43: Update WithLimit to replace the existing limit explicitly so a later
WithLimit(0) enforces zero rows when scopes are combined; preserve the current
offset while replacing the limit.
- Line 36: Update the offset handling in Paginate and WithOffset so a requested
zero offset cancels any existing GORM offset instead of retaining it; preserve
the existing behavior for nonzero offsets and page limits.
- Line 30: Update Paginate’s overflow path to attach the pagination overflow
error to a session copy of db before calling AddError, so direct calls do not
leave the reusable handle’s Error state set.

- Normalize `page` and `pageSize` in `Paginate` upfront before returning
the scope closure to prevent data races when closures are reused concurrently.
- Attach `PaginationOverflowError` to an isolated session copy of `*gorm.DB`
instead of mutating the reusable database handle directly.
- Update `WithLimit` to explicitly set the limit clause expression so that
combining scopes with `WithLimit(0)` enforces zero rows while preserving
  any existing query offset.
- Update `Paginate` and `WithOffset` to cancel existing offsets when a zero
offset is requested by calling `db.Offset(-1)`, while preserving existing
behavior for non-zero offsets and limits.
- Add test coverage for concurrent pagination, non-mutating handle overflow,
  zero-limit overrides, and zero-offset cancellation.
